Photo Credit: Otto Greule, Jr./Getty Images Editor's Update: Since this article was written on Friday, the Mariners have also sent 2B Dustin Ackley and LHP Lucas Luetge to AAA Tacoma, and called up INF Nick Franklin and RHP Hector Noesi. Although this move was a long time coming, and suggested by several Mariners analysts and enthusiasts, it finally came to fruition today: Jesus Montero was finally sent down to AAA Tacoma, while Jesus Sucre was called up to be the backup catcher to Kelly Shoppach. How will this demotion help Montero improve? Will Sucre be able to make any impact at all? Will there be any further roster moves coming? The philosophy that the Mariners management takes with Montero will be key. It seems that the experiment with him Montero at catcher should end, as he is a below average defensive catcher, and all of this time behind the plate has really diminished his hitting, his only true asset. The Mariners should make Montero a full-time DH, with the hope of restoring his offensive firepower. This type of move is not unprecedented, and history has shown that moving away from catcher has helped hitters regain their power, with Carlos Delgado being the best example. This could really help Montero gain some confidence at the plate, and some pop back in his legs. If the Montero-at-DH experiment doesn’t work, then it could be time to move on from him entirely, as he would have no real worth to the team. Then again, he is only 23. Will his replacement, Jesus Sucre, make an impact? He has never shown any consistent power, as in the equivalent of three full seasons in the minors, he has only hit 17 homers. This isn’t too encouraging, but the good news is that he has potential to be a good defensive catcher. Sucre has shown good skill in the minor leagues both stopping balls in the dirt and throwing out base stealers. It remains to be seen whether he can translate this success to the professional game, but he has shown promise, and also displays a great work ethic. Are any more roster moves coming? Jeremy Bonderman is one candidate who deserves another chance in the big leagues. He has been pitching very well in the minors this season, and if he doesn’t get called up soon, he will have the chance to opt for free agency on June 1.

John Clayton trains for, throws out first pitch

John Clayton is as popular as ever. The ESPN NFL analyst, commonly known as the “the Professor,” threw out the first pitch last night at the Safeco Field prior to the start of the Seattle Mariners game. Clayton even had himself a training regimen leading up to the game. Gotta hand it to Clayton, as the guy isn’t afraid make fun of himself, as we saw last year in the greatest...

Montero's future with M's in question

Jesus Montero's demotion to Triple-A has come with a position switch -- and a muddled future with the Seattle Mariners. Montero, who as a Yankees prospect was compared to Miguel Cabrera, was sent down this week after hitting just .208 in 29 games this season. Observers noticed Montero playing with very limited confidence as a result of the prolonged offensive malaise. Amid expectations...

Mariners send slumping C Montero to minors

The Seattle Mariners sent slumping catcher Jesus Montero to the minor leagues Thursday, a year after acquiring him in trade full of potential that hasn't panned out for either side. The Mariners optioned Montero to Triple-A Tacoma. He has 72 hours to join the club. The 23-year-old Montero is hitting .208 with three home runs and nine RBIs. He's also been a designated hitter...

Umpire badly blows double play call

First base umpire Jeff Nelson blew a call in unbelievable fashion on Friday night in Seattle. In the bottom of the second inning, Mariners catcher Jesus Sucre hit a grounder to first baseman Mitch Moreland. Moreland threw to Elvis Andrus at second for one, and Andrus fumbled with the ball before throwing it back to first for the apparent double play. Only that's not what really...

Jesus Montero Optioned to AAA Tacoma

Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma and will be replaced by catcher Jesus Sucre. Interestingly Mike Zunino  is the starter in Tacoma and Double-A back-up catcher Brandon Bantz  has been moved up and will be has backup.Where does that leave Montero? Apparently the Mariners will look to play Montero at first base and DH.  Zunio is considered...

Nothing goes right for Seattle Mariners in Anaheim

For the Seattle Mariners, their nine-game road trip started off very well with a series victory over the New York Yankees that left them one game short of .500.  Then, the bottom fell out.  First came Cleveland where the Indians took four in a row including three walk-off victories.  Seattle was unable to rebound and lost two straight in Anaheim and now find themselves with a...

Seattle Mariners demote Jesus Montero

New York Yankees fans were pitching a fit over a year ago when Brian Cashman traded away star hitting prospect Jesus Montero to the Seattle Mariners for starting pitcher Michael Pineda. They really became pissed when Pineda showed up fat and out-of-shape to Spring Training, and then subsequently injured his shoulder, costing him the entire 2012 season. Yankees fans envisioned Montero...

Jesus Montero sent to AAA, no longer viewed as MLB caliber catcher

Yesterday I wrote an article expressing my appreciation for New York Yankees GM, Brian Cashman. Dealing with loads of taxes, inflated expectations, and emotional ownership is not easy and as hard as it is for anyone in New York to be underrated, I think he has become just that. In yesterday’s article I lamented the Jesus Montero/Michael Pineda trade as one of his few mistakes,...

Umpire gets call wrong on bizarre double play in Mariners game (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. Umpire Jeff Nelson totally butchered a call on a double play ball in the second inning of the Texas Rangers-Seattle Mariners game on Friday night, giving catcher Jesus Sucre a memorable first career at-bat. Seattle led off the bottom of the second with two singles and had Sucre up with nobody out. Sucre grounded a ball to first baseman Mitch...

ESPN’s John Clayton Weak First Pitch at Mariners Game (Video)

So ESPN NFL reporter John Clayton has the athleticism of an old lady, not the most shocking news in the world but it is hysterical when the evidence supporting this fact is presented before you. Rangers-Mariners Preview

Joe Saunders is a completely different pitcher at home than on the road, and his career outings against the Texas Rangers have also been an indicator of that. The left-hander looks to improve to 10-0 in his career at Safeco Field and help the Seattle Mariners end a six-game losing streak Friday night when he faces a Rangers team that has fared well against southpaws. Saunders ...
