This is part 2 part of a sort of Jekyl and Hyde dual blog posting. This blog notes “5 reasons for hope” and is the companion blog for the darker side “My 5 darkest Canes fears” that you can find HERE. 1) The even reasonably healthy version of the 2013-14 Carolina Hurricanes was playing pretty good hockey. The team was a solid 4-2-3 when Ward was injured (with Khudobin already on the...

Canes' Jeff Skinner gets second opinion on upper-body injury

Injured forward Jeff Skinner again was missing Monday as the Canes practiced at PNC Arena. Canes coach Kirk Muller said Skinner was getting a second medical opinion on what has been deemed an "upper-body injury." Skinner has not played since suffering what appeared to be a hand injury during the Oct. 24 road game against the Minnesota Wild. "He's checking on...

Canes’ Skinner (upper body) seeks second opinion on injury

Jeff Skinner is trying to consult with multiple sources in terms of his upper body injury. The Carolina Hurricanes have gotten nothing but bad news lately when it comes to injuries, so they are hoping for some good news. According to the Raleigh News & Observer, the 21 year old missed practice on Monday to get a second opinion regarding how much time he will miss with whatever...

Matt Karash: Carolina Hurricanes blog 1 (of 2): My 5 darkest fears

This is 1 part of a sort of Jekyl and Hyde dual blog posting. This blog, “My 5 darkest Canes fears” is the companion blog for the much more optimistic “5 reasons for hope” that you can find HERE. Let me first say that these are not so much assertions or predictions but rather things where there is enough evidence, possibility or whatnot to consider it possible...

Hurricanes' Murphy fined for clipping

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Ryan Murphy has been fined $2,213.68, the maximum permitted under the CBA, for clipping New York Rangers forward Derek Dorsett in NHL Game No. 205 in New York on Saturday, Nov. 2, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The incident occurred at 13:36 of the second period. Murphy was assessed a minor penalty for clipping.

Hurricanes Week In Review 10/28 - 11/4

The Hurricanes are currently in the midst of a painful losing streak and it's something that all fans are used to by now. The team went through a similar skid of November of 2011 and the second half of last season, so all of us know how to get through these stretches. We are just tired of seeing them. All teams go through losing streaks because that's just the way an 82-game...

Game 14 By the Numbers: Hurricanes at Rangers

So here we are again, the Hurricanes have lost five games in a row and seem to look worse after every game. Instead of showing progress, the Canes keep developing more bad habits and are digging themselves into a bigger hole with each loss. I was hoping that Monday's loss to the Penguins would be the low point of the season but the Canes haven't shown any progression since...

The Airing of Grievances

I have been running this blog for almost three years and by now, most people know my shtick. Whenever the team goes through a rough stretch or has a problem, I like to dive into the numbers or go over the game tape to break down what happened and what the Hurricanes can do to fix it. Today, I'm going to be taking a different approach and give my two cents on some of the team...

Game 13 By the Numbers: Lightning at Hurricanes

Halloween may have been on Thursday night, but the Hurricanes decided to celebrate it a day later and showed up to last night's game disguised as the 2012-13 team. By that, I mean they were essentially the same "fragile" team  that buckled under adversity and collapsed whenever their game plan was disrupted. The Canes showed signs of breaking out of this mold early...

UMass Lowell downs Pesce and New Hampshire in overtime thriller

DURHAM, N.H. – The regulation 60-minutes weren’t enough for the UMass Lowell River Hawks and New Hampshire Wildcats to decide a winner on Saturday night. It took an extra 3:17 into the overtime period for UMass Lowell forward Derek Arnold to tally the game-winning-goal, downing New Hampshire, 3-2. “I saw a ton of room, and I had to take the shot,” Arnold said. “I got it...

Flyers-Hurricanes Preview

The Carolina Hurricanes have scored only five goals during a five-game losing streak. They'll try to end the skid Tuesday night at home against a Philadelphia Flyers team that can surely relate to offensive struggles. The Hurricanes (4-7-3) and Flyers (4-9-0) are two of six NHL teams averaging under 2.00 goals per game. After Saturday's 5-1 road loss to the New York Rangers...

Rangers Knock Off Hurricanes For Third Straight Win

The New York Rangers were back at home Saturday night looking for their third straight win against the Carolina Hurricanes. A more sentimental moment for Marc Staal who was facing his two brothers Eric and Jordan Staal (younger brother Jared is in the Hurricanes farm team the Charlotte Checkers). This will be Staal’s 45th time […]

Game 13: Building confidence

Photo: Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports The Carolina Hurricanes are in town tonight as the Rangers look to extend their winning streak to three games. Having already won two in a row and three of four, this Rangers club looks like one that is finally starting to click. On the other side of the coin, the Hurricanes have lost four in a row after a good start to the season. Losing...
