The Miami Heat have hardly looked like one of the NBA's elite teams in recent games, but they played much better than the Dallas Mavericks when the past two league champions met less than two weeks ago. As they return home from a lackluster trip Wednesday night, the Heat will try to earn a fourth consecutive win over the struggling Mavericks. Miami (21-8) endured back-to-back losses for only the second time this season during its four-game trek, falling 109-99 to Detroit on Friday and 104-85 to Milwaukee the next evening. The Heat appeared headed for a third straight defeat Monday when they trailed by double digits late in the third quarter against an injury-plagued Orlando team, but they rallied for a 112-110 overtime win. "This is a winning league," LeBron James said. "It's not about how close you came to losing or how close you came to winning." James had 10 of his 36 points in the extra period and finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double. Chri...

James wins men's USA Basketball award for 2012

LeBron James has been chosen USA Basketball's male athlete of the year for 2012 after equaling Michael Jordan's feat while leading the Americans to a gold medal. James was also the NBA's MVP and NBA Finals MVP in helping the Miami Heat win the championship. Jordan is the only other player to accomplish that in a calendar year, winning the NBA title, both MVP awards and...

LeBron James named player of the month

MIAMI The awards keep coming for LeBron James. The Miami Heat star on Wednesday was named USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year for 2012 and was honored by the NBA as Eastern Conference Player of the Month for December. James has won both Player of the Month awards this season as well as having been honored three times for Player of the Week. James won the USA Basketball award...

LeBron James Walking the Dog All Day Long Against the Magic (Video)

The process of letting the ball roll down the court without touching it in order to save time is called Walking the Dog.  I honestly can say I've never heard that term used before.  Apparently LeBron James loves walking the dog though.  He did it Monday for 10+ seconds against the Orlando Magic, which has to be a record if something as dumb as that was actually considered...

Nowitzki Nearing Full Strength In Fifth Game Back

James' passing, 32 points lead Heat to 119-109 OT win over Mavericks

MIAMI -- The pass to an open teammate -- such a simple concept -- can be a controversial thing when you are the consensus best basketball player on the planet. If his teammate makes the open shot, LeBron James is a genius. If he misses, James is scorned by those who believe the best player should take the big shot every time, even if double-teamed. Wednesday night, James’ pass...

Starting 5: Close with a flourish

Every morning, we will give you five things from the night before in the NBA to start your day. 1: A grand finale It was quite a calendar year for LeBron James. A third MVP award. A second Olympic gold medal. A first NBA Championship. About "damn time" indeed for James. He made the amazing seem mundane, displaying playmaking ability and scoring ability that...

This Picture Features Less Double Dribble Than Amir Johnson’s Jumpshot

I’ve never been good at recognizing basketball penalties. I know the rules of the game, but I’m almost always wrong. LeBron James gets a pass at half court, tucks the ball under his arm and f**king Frankenstein walks 40 feet into a dunk and my brain goes HEY WAIT A SECOND, but nope, the person next to me helpfully explains that they “get two steps!” I’m never right....

Mavs snap losing streak by beating Wizards

WASHINGTON -- Forget playing at their previous championship winning level: The scuffling Dallas Mavericks entered the New Year simply in need of a victory. Thanks to a dunking Vince Carter, a shot-making Dirk Nowitzki -- and playing the owners of the NBA's worst record -- the wish came true. Carter scored 23 points and Nowitzki's offense keyed a 22-6 third quarter run as...

Heat at Magic game preview

Game time: 5 p.m. ET TV: Sun Sports, FOX Sports Florida The return of Dwyane Wade wasn't enough to help the Miami Heat avoid losing back-to-back games. A visit to the slumping Orlando Magic might keep their skid from growing to a season-high mark. While LeBron James attempts to add to an impressive scoring run Monday, Miami will try to get back on track by sending Orlando to...
