The Dallas Mavericks are in a better position than the Los Angeles Lakers as it stands now.  Not many people would have predicted that when the season began.  The Lakers had a healthy roster including Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Steve Nash, and Pau Gasol.  The Mavericks, on the other hand, were preparing for the first part of their season without Dirk Nowitzki.  Yet despite the odds, the Mavericks are clinging to a .500 record while the Lakers are trying to dig out of a hole. The struggles the Lakers have faced this season have yet to result in a rash decision (except maybe hiring Mike D'Antoni over Phil Jackson), but the time could come soon.  Pau Gasol has been rumored in trade talks numerous times.  Now, it's Dwight Howard's turn.  The Laker's center is a free agent after this season and despite the fact that Los Angeles just got him, he could be a trade chip if things continue to go bad. ESPN's Chris Broussard thinks the Mavericks still have a chance at landing Howard (even though Howard still likely wants to play in Brooklyn).  He just thinks it would take getting him via free agency and trading a player. While Mavs could still have shot at D12 (should he leave LA), it will have to trade SMarion for room to max D12 & re-sign Mayo at big bucks— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) December 13, 2012If the Mavericks were to consider trading Shawn Marion, they would have to find a team willing to deal with his injury concerns.  Marion has battled a groin injury this season, and he has missed large chunks of time in two of the last four seasons.  He is 34 years old and his durability is a question.Regardless, the Mavericks know they'd have to make room under the cap to pay Howard.  The signing seems unlikely, but Howard and Nowitzki could be a dynamic duo of big men. Luxury tax may lead Lakers to make moves this season

The Lakers are on the hook for about 30 million in luxury tax this season. Compared with what they may pay next season, that's almost nothing. The league's new collective bargaining agreement includes a graduated tax that kicks in for the 2013-14 season. For every additional 5 million the team is over the tax threshold, the rate increases. Naturally the team has every hope...

Trade restrictions expire for recently signed Lakers

The Lakers had a busy off-season, bringing in eight new players while re-signing three. Dwight Howard, Earl Clark and Chris Duhon came from the Orlando Magic via trade. Steve Nash was acquired through a sign and trade with the Phoenix Suns. Robert Sacre and Darius Johnson-Odom were both picked up in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft. Under typical circumstances, when a player...

Lakers’ Loss to Knicks Creates More Funny Faces By Mike D’Antoni to Add to His Collection of Wacky Faces (Photos)

Mike D’Antoni was supposed to lead the Los Angeles Lakers’ turnaround, but 13 games into his tenure in Hollywood, any improvement by the Lakers is hard to see. The team fell to 4-9 under D’Antoni with Thursday’s loss to the New York Knicks, and the only good news for the Lakers was that Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard did not snip at each other on the court in this loss. For...

Dear The Los Angeles Lakers and Laker Fans

Dear Laker and Laker Fans, Thank you for this season, really it has been too easy. When you guys first traded for Dwight Howard I was so mad, I thought the league was rigged and I thought Kobe would get his 6th championship and tie MJ. I was pissed Orlando didn't want Pau Gasol in the deal. I was 100 percent sure Phil Jackson was going to coach you guys and win another championship...

Lakers End Losing Streak In D.C.

Photo courtesy of Rob Carr, Getty ImagesSomething looked weird at Verizon Center tonight; an oddity of sorts in these uncertain days – SMILING FACES. We’d forgotten what Kobe Bryant’s signature smirk looked like; wondered where Dwight Howard’s happy-go-lucky persona had gone; didn’t know when Metta World-Peace’s random comical remarks would make their re-appearance. All...

Los Angeles Lakers at New York Knicks: Primetime TV or just Another Game?

It’s clear to see why programmers and schedulers have tonight’s Knicks, Lakers game on primetime national television. Before the season started, you had Dwight Howard against Amar’e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony against Kobe Bryant, and a plethora of other former all-stars going head-to-head. (Photo by Chris Chambers/Getty Images) But is tonight’s matchup at Madison Square...

Preview: Lakers vs. Knicks

Despite being the only team in the NBA that have yet to lose at home and being a game and a half in front of the defending champions for the top spot in the east, the New York Knicks (16-5) will not be the subject of conversation for tonight's first matchup with the Lakers (9-13). Nothing against the Knicks, but that's how it goes when the team that's been synonymous...
