The Dallas Mavericks are in a better position than the Los Angeles Lakers as it stands now.  Not many people would have predicted that when the season began.  The Lakers had a healthy roster including Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Steve Nash, and Pau Gasol.  The Mavericks, on the other hand, were preparing for the first part of their season without Dirk Nowitzki.  Yet despite the odds, the Mavericks are clinging to a .500 record while the Lakers are trying to dig out of a hole. The struggles the Lakers have faced this season have yet to result in a rash decision (except maybe hiring Mike D'Antoni over Phil Jackson), but the time could come soon.  Pau Gasol has been rumored in trade talks numerous times.  Now, it's Dwight Howard's turn.  The Laker's center is a free agent after this season and despite the fact that Los Angeles just got him, he could be a trade chip if things continue to go bad. ESPN's Chris Broussard thinks the Mavericks still have a chance at landing Howard (even though Howard still likely wants to play in Brooklyn).  He just thinks it would take getting him via free agency and trading a player. While Mavs could still have shot at D12 (should he leave LA), it will have to trade SMarion for room to max D12 & re-sign Mayo at big bucks— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) December 13, 2012If the Mavericks were to consider trading Shawn Marion, they would have to find a team willing to deal with his injury concerns.  Marion has battled a groin injury this season, and he has missed large chunks of time in two of the last four seasons.  He is 34 years old and his durability is a question.Regardless, the Mavericks know they'd have to make room under the cap to pay Howard.  The signing seems unlikely, but Howard and Nowitzki could be a dynamic duo of big men.
