The Wisconsin men's hockey team tied Denver on Friday night in the opening game of a two-game series. The Badgers maintained the offensive zone for the bulk of the opening period, but had nothing to show for it. In fact, the Pioneers out-shot UW 13-12 in the first. Both teams squandered a few scoring chances in the opening two periods with no success. Leading to a scoreless game heading into the final period. Michael Mersch, who has been Wisconsin's go-to guy offensively at this point in the season, helped the Badgers break through when he scored on a deflection at the 7:06 mark of the third to give UW a 1-0 lead. Still down one late in the game, Denver opted to pull goaltender Juho Olkinuora, in favor of an extra attacker. The strategy paid off as BLANK scored from a tough angle, sneaking one by Wisconsin netminder Joel Rumpel, even the score at 1-1 with just 1:16 left in regulation.
