The New York Mets have made a step in the right direction as a franchise as they have locked up third baseman David Wright to an seven-year, $122mm contract extension, WFAN’s Ed Coleman reports. Adding the upcoming season to the deal (which was a team option at $16mm) would make it an eight-year deal worth $138mm. The Mets desire to keep Wright in a Mets uniform has been well documented over the last year. Wright who had his $16mm option picked up (year and money is part of the new deal) would have been a free agent after the upcoming season. Including this upcoming season as part of the deal, Wright will become the highest paid Mets player, surpasing fellow teammate Johan Santana who signed a $137.5 million six-year deal before the 2008 season. Wright, 30, had a solid year in 2012 with the Mets hitting .306/.391/.492 with 21 HR's, 93 RBI's and a .376 wOBA in 670 plate appearances. Locking up Wright allows the Mets to concentrate more attention on re-signing fellow All-Star and Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey.
