Cougar Life is a dating web site for older women to find younger men. Last month, the site asked their members which baseball player they’d most like to score with, and NY Met David Wright came out on top (pun intended…or not).
A staff member in the Mets marketing department thought they could use this prestigious award (or something) to get Wright more All-Star votes. This year’s ASG game is at Citi Field, where the Mets play, so it would be a slap in the face if Wright could not start at 3B.
The Mets are currently second to last in the NL East with a paltry 24-38 record and need all the positive PR that they can get. For what it’s worth, Wright is batting .297 with 9 HRs and 35 RBI.
Anyway, this staff member sent an email to Cougar Life, asking if they would be willing to partner with the team on a campaign to get Wright more votes. The emails were leaked to Deadspin, which has published all of them.
Cougar Life wanted to also give away a date with Wright, should he become single. Wright is engaged to model Molly Beers, and the Mets ultimately decided that this was not the right way to garner votes for one of their players.
Via Deadspin, the Mets did release a statement:
"Cougar Life voted David Wright as the hottest cub. In our effort to expand All-Star balloting to wider audiences, so as to increase votes, we did reach out to Cougar Life. Last year there was a big swing of votes at the end that cost David the starting job. We decided to do everything to make sure that doesn't happened (sic)again this year. We ultimately elected to pass. We thank whoever leaked this to Deadspin for increasing awareness of #VOTEWRIGHTNOW AT METS.COM."
According to CBS NY, even Wright has asked the Mets to tone it down:
“It’s nice when the organization is trying so hard to do something for one of their players, and I can’t thank them enough for that,” he said.
“At the same time, I’ve asked them to kind of back it down a little bit, especially with the stuff in-between innings. You appreciate what they’re trying to do and they’re very goodhearted, but to me this is a team game. As much as I’d like to be here to represent this team in the All-Star game, we can’t let this become an in-between inning, one-player production.”
This whole thing is a lesson in PR gone wrong. Dangling a 30-year old engaged man in front of NYC’s finest cougars in attempt to get said man into a game that ultimately doesn’t even matter does not seem like the best idea. Someone high enough in the Mets organization surely realized this and put an end to this ridiculous idea. When the player you’re trying to promote isn’t even on board, you know you need to adjust your strategy.
BEST OF MAXIM
David Wright spoke out about the overzealous campaign by the Mets to get him voted to the All Star Game.
“It’s nice when the organization is trying so hard to do something for one of their players and I can’t thank them enough for that,” Wright said.
“But at the same time, I’ve asked them to kind of back it down a little bit, especially with the stuff between innings...
David Wright reached base in a career high-tying nine consecutive plate appearances after walking and hitting a run scoring double in his first two trips to the plate yesterday. He also accomplished the feat, August 23-24, 2005. Wright had six singles, a double and two walks during his streak.
Since June 5, the Mets third baseman is hitting .441 (15-34) with five runs scored...
When the first vote totals for the MLB All-Star Game were released last week, David Wright was in second. A desperate Mets marketing department didn’t want Wright to lose to Pablo Sandoval for the second year in a row, especially not with the game being held at Citi Field. So one employee decided to turn to an untapped voting base, one that would support Wright...
So now it’s come to this.
After a series of emails were leaked to Deadspin, the Mets had no choice but to admit they stooped down to hitting up a cougar/cub dating website to help promote David Wright’s All Star Game bid.
Wright lost out to Giant’s 3rd baseman Pedro Sandoval last year, and this year Sandoval already has a lead on him. With this year’s games taking place...
For those scoring at home, the website Cougarlife.com, has over 3.9 million members, which is probably close to double what the New York Mets will draw this year. And, a fraction of that would be enough to select David Wright to the All-Star Game this July at Citi Field.
So, despite the obvious reaction of “what were they thinking?’’ the potential numbers indicate it might...
Matt Oberste grew up in Oklahoma as a lone ranger. As the majority of the population flocked to the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers, he sought solace with another team: The New York Mets. His favorite player? David Wright, who he modeled himself after growing up.
Oberste was selected by the Mets in the seventh-round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft and quickly signed with the...
The New York Mets are going all out in an effort to ensure David Wright is voted in as the starting third baseman for the NL All-Star team this year. The Mets are hosting the Mid-Summer Classic at Citi Field next month, and they don’t want to suffer the embarrassment of having their franchise player [...]
Just as the New York Mets took a tumble, dropping a 2-1 decision to the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, this fan took a tumble of his own.
Thus, our "Boob of the Day." Congrats Mr. Tumbling Mets fan!

With the MLB All-Star game in Queens this year, the New York Mets are hoping to send as many Mets players as possible with the biggest name being third baseman David Wright — who is currently about 200,000 votes behind San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Sandoval is now on the disabled list due to a foot injury and this may help Wright in making a rebound in his...
David Wright has gained some ground on Pablo Sandoval according to the latest All Star voting update released by Major League Baseball this evening.
Last week, Sandoval had more than a 200,000 vote lead, but now Wright has narrowed that gap to just 126,403 votes.
The Mets have made an aggressive push to get the vote out, as has MMO and we are starting to make a big impact. There’s...

Adam Wainwright became the major leagues' first 10-game winner by pitching seven scoreless innings and sent Matt Harvey to his first loss of the season, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the New York Mets 2-1 Thursday in a classic pitching matchup.

Check out the video. NBC sportscaster Bob Costas referred to the New York Mets 4-3 victory celebration over the Chicago Cubs as an “indication of the ongoing decline of Western Civilization.”
