Rookie defensive end Dion Jordan badly wanted to sign his contract before the start of Dolphins training camp so he wouldn’t fall behind his teammates. While he signed Saturday, he still was off the field at Sunday’s opening practice and it’s unclear when he’ll return. The Dolphins placed Jordan, the No. 3 overall pick, on the Non-Football Injury List. That list is for a player who gets hurt away from the football field or sustains an injury before the draft when he still is with his college team. Jordan is rehabilitating from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, an injury he suffered when playing at Oregon. His agent said Saturday that Jordan is healthy and that it would be up to the team whether to let him practice, but Jordan said that he’s known for a couple of days that he would be placed on the Non-Football Injury List. The move lets Miami potentially place Jordan on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, which means he would have to sit out the first six games of the season. The Dolphins are under no obligation to do so, and Jordan could return at any time. But if the Dolphins hadn’t placed him on the Non-Football Injury List, they wouldn’t have the option of stashing him on the PUP list. Otherwise, starting the season on injured reserve could mean missing the entire season. Coach Joe Philbin would not give a timetable for Jordan’s return. Jordan also said he wasn’t sure when he would take the field.
