Well congratulations to Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace. On Monday, he became the first athlete to say something insensitive about NBA player Jason Collins coming out of the closet. Collins announced he was gay with a cover story in this week’s Sports Illustrated, becoming the first openly gay player to be active in one of the four major American professional sports. The 34-year-old Collins played the 2012-13 season with the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards, playing in 38 games and starting nine. Wallace took to Twitter in the wake of overwhelming support for Collins’ move to come out of the closet and said the following: “All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH…” He followed that up with this gem: “I’m not bashing anybody don’t have anything against anyone I just don’t understand it” Alright Mike, that’s fair and all, but dude, just let the guy have his day. Not everyone agrees with homosexuality, but as a pro athlete it’s probably best not to say anything publicly about the issue. Especially on such a big day for Collins. Those tweets have since been deleted from Wallace’s account. I realize there will be backlash against Collins and many people will express their views, not thinking they are being insensitive or bigoted, etc. But honestly people, it’s 2013. If you don’t like something, then don’t let it impact you. Just let it go. Gay rights have become the civil rights issue of this generation and much like the civil rights movement of the 1960s, there is no stopping the wave of progress. I applaud Jason Collins for publicly coming out of the closet. What that means for sports in the future is anyone’s guess, but it is positive news nonetheless. For the record, Wallace did follow up both of those tweets with the following: “Never said anything was right or wrong I just said I don’t understand!! Deeply sorry for anyone that I offended” I appreciate his backtrack, but his initial reaction is pretty telling.
