A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today. Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates...
Below are the top Runs Created* totals in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The rankings include every hitter who had an at-bat for a Pirates’ minor league affiliate, not including DSL teams, and with no limitations on whether the hitter has prospect eligibility. Players who spent time at different levels are counted multiple times, once for each level,...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to an over-slot deal with eighth round pick Neil Kozikowski, Pirates Prospects has learned from a source with knowledge of the discussions. The deal is for $425,000, which is $155,400 over-slot for the eighth round.
After signing second rounder Blake Taylor to an under-slot deal, the Pirates have $266,000 for over-slot deals without any penalties...
In the last few weeks the Pittsburgh Pirates have made a lot of prospect promotions. Gerrit Cole was promoted to the majors. Andrew Lambo and Stolmy Pimentel moved up to Triple-A. This week saw Nick Kingham and Gregory Polanco get promotions to Altoona. With half of the minor league season in the books, we should start seeing more and more moves.
I get asked “When will Player A...

Yes, that was Gerrit Cole making his second Major League start Sunday, even though you could have easily confused it for a replay of his debut. The phenom prospect threw the same number of fastballs, allowed the same number of...

On Saturday, the Pirates called up AAA pitcher Brandon Cumpton to make a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Adding another pitcher was huge, seeing that the starting rotation was slowly settling in with super-rook Gerrit Cole making his vaunted debut earlier in the week. Cumpton one-upped his more-highly-lauded teammate in the strikeout department, striking out the side in the...
There was a lot of news on the site today. At certain points of the day we were posting an article and immediately starting on the next update. That didn’t leave for a lot of time to process any of the individual moves. Some of them might have even been lost in the mix. So I wanted to recap the day, with some overall thoughts on some of the moves.
In the 2008 draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected a player they envisioned would lock down third base for years to come and more importantly the cleanup spot in the batting order for years to come. It has been a work in progress, as Pedro Alvarez has yet to do the latter, but in reality, Alvarez is right on schedule when compared to other power hitters and could become the new Adam...
The 2013 Jamestown Jammers season begins today. Some of you may be wondering “Who are the Jamestown Jammers?” The Pirates used to have their short-season A-ball affiliate in State College. The contract with the Spikes ended last year, and the Spikes opted to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals. Thus the Pirates moved their short-season A-ball team to Jamestown. Everything is the...
Eliecer Navarro will be promoted to Altoona.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will promote left-hander Eliecer Navarro to Altoona this week. John Eshleman was covering the Altoona Curve tonight, and Navarro was with the team. He is expected to make his first start this week, which will probably come on Tuesday.
Navarro had a 2.86 ERA in 69.1 innings with Bradenton this year, along with a 62...

Rookie Gerrit Cole won again, getting home run help from Pedro Alvarez and pitching the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-3 Sunday.
Cole (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks in 5 2-3 innings. The top pick from the 2011 draft won in his big league debut last week.
Alvarez snapped a 2-all tie when he connected off Zack Greinke (3-2) for a three-run...
This is about as frustrating as losses get. The Pirates went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position tonight against Mike Leake, Tony Cingrani, and Aroldis Chapman. Francisco Liriano turned in one of his smoother starts as a Pirate (six innings, 84 pitches, six strikeouts, five hits, two walks), except that two of the hits he gave up were solo home runs. Bryan Morris followed that...
