A University of Mississippi professor says that a group of Ole Miss students, including football players, disrupted a production of a campus play with ''hate speech'' on Tuesday night. Michael Barnett, the assistant theatre chair, says several students in the play told him that audience members were disruptive and used ''derogatory terms'' for homosexuals during a production of ''The Laramie Project'' on campus. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze confirmed to The Associated Press Thursday that football players were in the crowd. Barnett says a group of football players apologized after the play. Freeze tweeted on Thursday morning, ''We certainly do not condone any actions that offend or hurt people in any way. We are working with all departments involved to find the facts.'' The Daily Mississippian first reported the disruption.

An estimated 20 players from the Ole Miss team, along with several other students, reportedly disrupted the university theater department's performance of "The Laramie Project." The play covers the aftermath of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, an openly gay male...

Open letter to Ole Miss educators

An Open Letter to the Educators at the University of Mississippi: Colleges are places of higher education. Unfortunately, all of life's lessons can not be taught within the confines of classrooms. Time for Ole Miss to send a message

The scene was this: a college play, "The Laramie Project," at the University of Mississippi, Tuesday night. It's a play about a town in Wyoming and its reaction to the murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard, who was tortured, pistol-whipped, tied to a fence and left to die. This weekend marks the 15th anniversary of his attack. It's a play meant to open...

Freeze, Malzahn put friendship on hold for a week

Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze had one final text exchange Sunday with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn. The gist of the conversation: It's hard playing against friends, so we'll talk when this is over. ''We don't enjoy it,'' Freeze said. ''But we've got to do it.'' No. 24 Ole Miss (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) travels to face Auburn...

Patiently Waiting
