Tuscon 3, Las Vegas 1
A ninth-inning meltdown resulted in a 3-1 defeat for the Las Vegas 51s today, but they can still clinch a division crown Saturday thanks to a loss by Sacramento.
The 51s were leading 1-0 with one out in the ninth against Tucson, but Padres second baseman Dean Anna hit a run-scoring single and left fielder Kyle Blanks blasted a homer off of closer Justin Hampson as Tucson came from behind.
Las Vegas starter Rafael Montero threw 6 1/3 strong innings, striking out eight and allowing just three hits.
The 51s (80-61) scored in the fifth inning when leadoff hitter Kirk Niewenhuis slapped a single to right field, scoring catcher Juan Centeno. Centeno had reached base on the second of his two singles on the night.
In their bid to clinch the Pacific Coast League Southern Division title, the 51s were helped by a 7-1 loss by Sacramento at Tacoma today. The 51s can clinch the division title Saturday with a win over Tucson (75-66). Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Cashman Field.

Well, it seems all but apparent that Bobby Parnell’s fine season will be coming to an end this month.
According to MetsBlog, Parnell is not even close to resuming any baseball-related activities. Parnell was placed on the DL on August 6 with a neck injury. He had an epidural shot to alleviate the pain, but so far it has not worked. Parnell is going to get another shot soon and...
Many people took it with a grain of salt when Matt Harvey tweeted the following:
Thank you everyone for the kind words and support. I may be done this year, but I will be back next year for April 1.
— Matt Harvey (@MattHarvey33) August 27, 2013
Surely, this was just Harvey’s competitive, bulldog mentality clouding his judgement. We all know that Tommy John surgery means a minimum...
These past two weeks have been tough for Mets fans. Two weeks ago we learned that that both Jeremy Hefner and Jenrry Mejia were not going to be pitching again this season. This past week, we found out that Matt Harvey, the most exciting story this season, went down with a torn UCL. Harvey’s future is uncertain: He could try to go the Adam Wainwright route and rehabilitate the...
The Mets have made a few roster moves today (and yesterday, for that matter). Here’s a summary of everything I can see that’s going on:
New York is still hoping they’ll see Jeurys Familia back in the bullpen before 2013 comes to a close. He took a step closer to doing that today in PSL. He threw an inning for St. Lucie in their season-ending 16-0 blowout victory. He allowed...
1. Noah Syndergaard, RHP
Syndergaard just celebrated his 21st birthday yesterday, and will be trying to get himself back on track after what probably was his worst start of 2013. He threw against Bowie on August 26th, allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on nine hits (three homers), two walks, and five strikeouts in three innings pitched. He’s now 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA...
When ‘The Franchise’ speaks, you’d be wise to listen.
Mets great Tom Seaver has spoken out in the wake of Matt Harvey’s season ending injury. In Seaver’s rant, he left no stone unturned–even going after today’s ‘computer geeks’ who Seaver perceives to be running things.
“These kids today, they want to be men, they want to be foxhole guys, but they’re not...
It’s sad to see our Ace get hit with an injury the year before the Mets were “Ready to Compete” but… if you think about it, it could have been worse. Imagine if we had traded Noah Syndergaard or Zack Wheeler for offensive help (Like Giancarlo Stanton or Carlos Gonzalez) in the offseason and Harvey gets this (basically inevitable) injury in Spring Training? Or in June...
Call me crazy, but at some point a long disappointing season can wear even a die hard fan down. As many of you know, I’m an out of market fan. As such, whenever the Mets visit the district my wife and I make sure to attend at least one game each series. This series will be no different, but I chose instead not to take advantage of a pretty rare opportunity.
As I looked over my...

Pitch counts and inning limits have become the standard Major League Baseball teams use when trying to keep their young pitchers from getting injured.
However, it is tough to say with certainty that this approach is working, and the latest example is New York Mets ace Matt Harvey, who is done for the season after sustaining a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.
