Francisco Liriano took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning before faltering in his first no-decision this season, and pinch-hitter Justin Morneau singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth Sunday to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Chicago Cubs 3-2. Pittsburgh, which began the day tied with St. Louis for the NL Central lead, took three of four from the last-place Cubs and won for the sixth time in seven games. Morneau, acquired from Minnesota on Aug. 31, drove in his first run for the Pirates. The 2006 AL MVP is batting .279 (12 for 43) with Pittsburgh. With the score 2-2 in the eighth, Andrew McCutchen was hit by a pitch from Pedro Strop (2-2), took second on Marlon Byrd's bloop single to center and scored on Morneau's single. Kyle Farnsworth (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Mark Melancon completed a three-hitter with a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances. Liriano didn't allowed a hit until Junior Lake singled into the hole between third base and...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Possible playoff rotation

Francisco Liriano (Courtesy DAVID DENOMA/REUTERS) The Pittsburgh Pirates have been carried most of the season by their pitching, especially the starting rotation. The majority of their starters have performed well this year. Even injuries could not bring down the rotation thanks to the depth options. With the end of the season approaching, the Pirates have their best starters going...

Wandy Rodriguez Shut Down the Rest of the Season

Wandy Rodriguez has been shut down for the season. (Photo by: David Hague) The Pittsburgh Pirates will be shutting down Wandy Rodriguez for the rest of the season, according to manager Clint Hurdle. Hurdle said that Rodriguez continues to pitch with “pain and discomfort”. I’ve written recently about how the playoff rotation could look if Rodriguez was able to come back. He...

James McDonald Elects Free Agency

James McDonald has elected free agency. Photo by Mark Olson. According to the MLB.com transactions page (h/t to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish), James McDonald has elected free agency after being outrighted to Indianapolis. The Pirates designated him for assignment last week, and he cleared waivers in the process. He’s now eligible to sign with any team for the remainder of the...

Cubs lose to Pirates 3-2; Morneau go-ahead single

Three batters into the game, it appeared Chicago Cubs starter Travis Wood might not make it out of the first inning. Jose Tabata led with a triple off the center-field fence and scored on a wild pitch to put the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead 1-0. Jordy Mercer followed with a double that bounced into the left-field bleachers, and Andrew McCutchen singled to put runners at the corners...

Starling Marte getting closer to return

Pittsburgh Pirates' outfielder Starling Marte faced live pitching prior to Saturday's win against the Chicago Cubs.  He faced left handed pitcher Kris Johnson and then entered the game as a late inning pinch runner and defensive replacement. As reported by George Von Benko of MLB.com, manager Clint Hurdle said that Marte is getting close to seeing regular game action...

NL Central Face Off: St.Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

This year has been a tremendous year for the National League Central. The Pittsburgh Pirates have their first winning season since 1992. The Cincinnati Reds are in position for a wildcard spot. The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to repeat previous year’s successes. The NL Central’s playoff race seems like the most ignored story in sports right now, and yet it has the most drama...

Game 149 Preview: Pirates vs. Cubs

Cubs (63-85) at Pirates (86-62) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT, WGN The Bucs – now tied for first place again – will look to maintain that and hopefully regain it outright with a win today over the Cubbies. They’ll be going for a series victory, and a loss and split would be pretty disappointing. All three games in this series have been tight so far...

Pirates 2, Cubs 1

The Pirates were able to erase a tough Friday night loss and and otherwise empty night of offense on Saturday with two big swings of the bat from Jose Tabata and Marlon Byrd, leading them to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs and back in to a first place tie. Gerrit Cole followed his tremendous outing in Texas with another gem in this game, despite a hiccup in the first inning when one...

Travis Sawchik on the shifts

If you haven't yet, I strongly recommend you go to the Trib's site today and check out Travis Sawchik's feature on the Pirates' defensive shifts. In addition to the things that you probably already know about the shifts (you probably remember James Santelli's piece about it from earlier this summer; if you don't please go read that post, as well), Sawchik...

Pirates get 1 hit off Cashner, lose to Padres 2-0

Neil Walker summed it up succinctly. ''Some nights you just get beat,'' the Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman said. Andrew Cashner carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and faced the minimum 27 batters in a one-hitter that sent the San Diego Padres past the Pirates 2-0 on Monday night. Cashner (10-8) retired his first 18 batters before Jose Tabata grounded...

Game 148: Pirates 2 Cubs 1

I know that he's really only emerged over his last two starts, but suddenly I'm not sure that there's any Pirate pitcher that I feel more comfortable with on the mound than Gerrit Cole. Cole got into some trouble in the first inning tonight and got partially bailed out by the defense behind him, then he shut the Cubs down over the next six innings. In the first inning...

Game 150: Padres 2 Pirates 0

There are two ways to look at this game. One way would be to simply say this: Andrew Cashner was freaking awesome. The other way would be to pick at it. To say that the Pirates haven't really hit well lately, despite all the wins, and that AJ Burnett has been incredible for the Pirates and that he clearly means a lot to the team both on the field and in the locker room, but geez...

Gerrit Cole sets his sights on the Cubs

Last night's loss was frustrating, but really, it's not a huge deal so long as it remains an isolated incident. I was hoping to see the Pirates take six of eight from the Cubs and Padres and they can certainly still do that even with last night's loss.  Gerrit Cole returns to the mound after his breathtaking domination of the Rangers on Monday. I won't lie; I...

A wild finish: 2 weeks left, playoff races sizzle

Only two weeks left to sort the baseball playoff picture, and the chase for October is sizzling. A quick look at how the races shake out: THE WILD SIDE: It's a scramble for the two AL wild-card spots, with a half-dozen teams trying to claim them. Texas and Tampa Bay are tied at the top, but wobbling. Cleveland is a half-game back, Baltimore is 2 1/2 behind, the Yankees trail...
