When the infamous photo of Michael Phelps with his mouth pressed against a bong hit the internet more than three years ago, former Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder was not surprised. Crowder, who is now a mid-day host on 560 WQAM’s “The Jorge Sedano Show” in Miami, said he saw Phelps smoking weed no more than three weeks prior to the picture coming out. And the 18-time gold medalist was supposedly in good company. “I was on South Beach probably three weeks before (the infamous photo came out)” Crowder explained. “Everybody knows who Young Jeezy is — he was in (the club). It was crazy because it was Young Jeezy and Michael in the next section over from us at (a nightclub). I look and I see Young Jeezy’s hanging out with a big old white guy and it was Michael Phelps. “I shook his hand and he was blowing people off because he was drunk too, and I see him hit the blunt later on when Jeezy passed it. No lie! I don’t get star struck or impressed by many people but when I saw Young Jeezy hand Michael Phelps a blunt that was impressive to me.” Young Jeezy and Phelps interacted with one another during the London Olympics, so it would make sense that they have met before. Phelps wasn’t the only Olympic swimmer Crowder threw under the bus. It just so happens that he and Ryan Lochte attended the University of Florida at the same time, and Crowder said Lochte loved the herb as well. “When I left Florida Ryan Lochte was younger than me so he had to be a new freshman,” Crowder said. “And he walked around with his hippie long blond hair and he smoked weed all the time. That’s what Ryan Lochte was. The first time I saw him was in the Olympic Trials and he had the Gator (swim cap) on and I didn’t know the name Ryan Lochte — I remembered the face. And I was like ‘Oh it’s a Gator in the Olympics’ and I looked and I’m like ‘Oh that’s the little hippie pothead boy that was a freshman when I was there.’” Crowder then went on to mention how swimmers only swim for four months out of every four years, so they have three years to “mess off, drink and smoke” and then get into shape very quickly. It’s not quite that simple, but Olympic athletes are young for the most part. Young kids who gain world recognition in a hurry oftentimes like to party and have a good time, so it would be naive to think Lochte and Phelps are the only two Olympic athletes who have done this type of stuff. If anything it helps explain why Lochte makes mistakes like this one on live television and thinks annoying catchphrases are cool. If you ask me it’s kind of a relief. Audio below:

  • Who the hell is this Crowder guy? He sounds like a McCarthian fascist -- "the little hippie-pothead boy."
I just can't stand people that pretend to be hollier than thou and belittle the accomplishments of others.
  • suidowei is the only person on this page more ignorant than the author of the article. Both need to be ignored. The article is a worthless piece of junk and the comment by suidoweei should be deleted. Both exemplify the crap that we see on the internet.
  • How do jerks like suidoweii manage to get their worthless comments printed? He's almost as bad as the author of this stupid article. Both need to be ignored. I'll certainly be sure to ignore Crowder in the future. Why doesn't Yardbarker show come common sense and just dump this article.
  • Agreed....he's an NFL "has-been" turned into ANOTHER AM radio talk show idiot, living off the lives of others. Guess now he'll build a distinguished career specializing in making a dent in a seat cushion.
  • Who cares...smoking weed is no different than consuming alcohol. So long as it is not done in excess, nothing is wrong with it. Legalize it!
  • I hear you bro!
  • I'm not going to argue that the two of them smoked weed. But the idea they only trian for four months every four years is ridiculous. This guys clearly doesn't know the sport of swimming. They have to train pretty much constantly to keep up that level. They may smoke and drink...but their also training their asses off. Swimming isn't like football where you get a few months off to rest.
  • With around 50,000 students at University of Florida he was able to recognize the little hippie-pothead boy that was a freshman when he was there?
  • How this clown Crowder even got another job after being such a bonehead as a Phin is beyond me. Let alone putting any stock in his words which have always been to gain self attention. Do I believe these guys have partied? Sure I do. But do I believe Crowder witnessed firsthand? Absolutely not.
  • let's get our name in the news and report everyone that is out having a good time because they are thinking they are not under the microscope. Guess what? I really don't give a sh** that they were smoking pot. I'm tired of these aholes that are supposed to be a part of the scene trying to make a buck off of celebrities and their habits. Get a life
  • Channing Crowder is a TURD, I am a dolphins season ticket holder and there is a reason he is no longer on the team, because he sucked, he sucked when he was a Gator and he sucked when he was with the Fins.

He has no idea what type of athelets swimmers are, fitness wise he couldn't even hold their dripping wet speedo.

I live in Fort Lauderdale and believe me, he will not be on the radio very long, he has no idea what he is talking about, that is if you can call what he does as talking, he sounds like he has a mouthfull of marbles. I don't know what he majored in at Florida, but if it was communications his old man should ask for a refund!!!!
  • Does he sound like Shannon Sharpe?
  • Wow - this guy doesn't mind dropping a dime on anyone. I hope anyone that he associates with reads this article and takes note.
  • I look and I see Young Jeezy’s hanging out with a big old white guy and it was Michael Phelps.

If I said a big old black dude I would be a racist, Double standard.

Drew Stanton likely out for the year, postseason included

A season that has been defined by surprising all-around team play and marred by injuries to multiple major contributors will pretty much end that way for the Arizona Cardinals. Belichick: Garoppolo has better understanding of NFL

It’s only right that three days after Christmas, the New England Patriots will get to play with their shiny new quarterback. Since Sunday’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills means nothing to the New England Patriots  — they’ve already clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC — keeping their starters in the game for all four quarters seems like a ticking time bomb for injuries...

The last time the Lions won in Green Bay

Mel Gray returned a fourth quarter punt 78 yards for a touchdown. Erik Kramer completed two touchdown passes to Robert Clark. Since that fateful December afternoon in Green Bay, the Packers have won 23 consecutive home games against Detroit...
