World-class swimmer Michael Phelps, who acquired Olympic medals in the same effortless manner in which people collect Happy Meal toys (just me?), apparently has turned away from the world of competitive swimming (if we can believe what he says is true) and moved on to a new challenge: the game of golf.
So much so, in fact, that shortly after the conclusion of the London Olympics, Phelps signed on to be the pupil of Hank Haney and appear on the world-renowned golf coach’s show on the Golf Channel, The Haney Project.
It certainly appears that the newfound dedication to the fine sport is paying dividends, if the putt he holed during the Pro-Am event at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St. Andrews, Scotland is any indication. All 159 feet of it.
Phelps was playing alongside Englishman Paul Casey, who had an interesting experience of his own Friday involving an eagle putt and a mangy mongrel of a mutt who made off with is golf ball, Phelps lined up this mile-long putt on the 6th hole at Kingsbarns, pulled the blade back, and stood there, seemingly for an eternity, as he watched the ball meander its way down towards the cup…
And wouldn’t you know it? Bingo. Right in the hole. Nicely done, although that’s a one-in-a-million shot. He could stand there with buckets of balls and likely never make that putt again.
