College football's bowl season is inching closer, and it's never too early to take a look at what the matchups might look like. With 13 weeks of results in the books, the bowl picture for nearly every team is starting to clear.

The post-Week 13 bowl projections are a mixture between how things would look if the season ended today, projection of Week 14, and considering the results so far this year.

* Indicates an at-large team due to a conference unable to fill bowl slots according to Athlon's projections.

** UCF is appealing a postseason ban and for now, is eligible to compete in the 2012 postseason.

Bold indicates a team has accepted bowl bid.

  • 35 Bowl Games! Are you kidding me??? Stop this insanity. We need a playoff format that includes direct competition between Conference Champions leading to a national title game. Nothing else will do.
  • College football teams cannot play any more games in a season, they already play too many. Cut the schedule, and an 8 game playoff might make sense. One of the good things about the BCS is that it gives you credit for the entire season--not just one playoff game. All the major conference teams and ND agreed to the BCS format, all of them, if they break their word, thy're just whining liars.
  • Go Irish!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • The Irish are long over due! Sending love to my Irish from Indiana! You guys got this! GO IRISH!!
  • I feel the love, I grew up in South Bend and now live in Oklahoma, trust me, it's not easy being catholic and a Irish fan in Oklahoma, but my son & daughter have made it through all the good time as well as the Gerry Faust years...go Irish, it's OUR time
  • ROLL TIDE
  • im shocked that you guys think vandy wont be pick to play in the gator bowl, look im a state fan and vs wisconsin is a great matchup but it wouldnt shock me if the two schools flip flopped with state at the music city and vandy at the gator either way great matchups for all bowls #hailstate
  • bcs you have got to stop and get this right you have got to take top 11 team and let them play each other untill you have 2 teams left that will be your title game and fill in the rest of your 4 bcs bowls with you may have it take top 12 for math to work out. but the bcs is becomeing bs
  • I agree with you 100%. This format is just not working and its not fair to the fans to not have a playoff. The BCS has been pushing for Alabama to reach the BCS championship game ever since they lost. In my opinion Notre Dame is not even in the same class as Alabama and they will lose by 28 points. A true BCS championship game would be Oregon vs Alabama. The one loss Oregon had this year was to the #1 defense in college football, and if the kicker wouldn't have missed that field goal they would be playing for the National Championship. I just think Oregon and Alabama are truly the two best teams in college football.
  • The Oregon team you are referring to lost to Stanford which was Beat by Notre Dame. How do you figure? The number 1 defense in college football is Alabama followed by Notre Dame. In what way is Stanford, though very good, number one.

How can you say Oregon is better than Notre Dame when they lost to a team undefeated Note Dame beat?
  • Maybe because the Pac-12 team that beat Stanford 17-14 got whupped by Oregon in the first half ....before they pulled their 1st string...like just about everyone else they played. C'mon, we all know everyone can have a bad day....just ask all the 11-1's in the SEC.
  • Does not change the fact the Stanford beat Oregon. Stanford must have had a "bad day" against its Pac-12 opponent.

Admire your eyes for good football. The Irish are increasingly playing this kind of ball as evidenced by what might be an unprecedented goal line defense which held for eight plays inside the seven against SC as validation of what they have done consistently all year.

Time to give the Irish some hard-earned credit

    Update: November 30, 2012
Just want to point out that if the above bowl projections are carefully looked at, it will be seen that ten teams Notre Dame played and beat are in Bowl Games. This is a strength of schedule stat that should not be overlooked. No other team in America can say that.
  • It's a shame that Ohio State and Penn State were excluded from participating in the bowl games this year because of what their coaches did and did not do. The coaches of these two great football powers were fired, the players are gone and now the new coaches and the new recruits have to pay the penalty, It does not seem right or fair to me. I think the NCAA should hammer the offenders and not the players who remain. Ban coaches for life (or ten years) and kick the offending players from the rosters. Both Penn State and Ohio State should be playing in a bowl game; in fact I think Ohio State should be playing ND for the National Championship (they finished with a perfect record this year,
  • Its like this. The coach is an employee of the school. The coach broke the rules thus the school who is responable in the end pays the price. No different than if a worker at Exxon makes a mistake and dumps oil into the gulf. Who is fined and held accountable? Exxon, not the employee.Ohio State is in charge of the coach. It is their job to monitor him and his program. They failed to do so. It isn't as unfair as you are presenting it to be.

Oh, Like ND, OS played and beat how many top teams this season? Being unbeaten should mean nothing. A team who plays 4 top ten teams and loses one game as an example should be ranked above a team who plays 0 top ten teams yet is unbeaten. Be reasonable!
  • What makes Ohio State think they're above the rules. Just because they went undefeated doesn't give them any special privileges. Now you know how USC felt. Play by the rules and you won't have this problem. Besides, Ohio State played a very weak schedule and would absolutely get killed in the BCS championship bowl. Either team would beat them by 28 points.
  • Roll Tide!
  • My sentiments exactly! Go BAMA!
  • Purdue will fill the Big Ten spot in the Little Caesars game.
  • Rammer Jammer, yellow hammer give'em hell ALABAMA!! is all I
    have to say! ROLL TIDE!
  • The NFL only has 32 teams and they have the opportunity for playoffs, but college has a gazillion teams and no playoff structure? It makes no sense. There are college teams who can remain undeafeated and never get the opportunity to go to a national championship. Makes zero sense to me. I don't know how college fans stand it. Instead, they have to settle for ridiculous bowl games that mean what??? What does winning the Go Daddy Bowl game mean? Ridiculous.
  • GO BAMA!
  • You've got Toledo in the Little Ceasers Bowl as MAC Champions; and they are not even playing in the MAC championship game tonight ?
  • This better not be. San Jose State won 10 games, barely lost to Stanford!! They're ranked, for the first time since 1987.
  • What happens if Bama loses to Georgia...do they bump Florida from the Sugar, or are they relegated to the Capitol One Bowl? I think whatever the outcome of the SEC Champ. game, Georgia & Alabama deserve to be in a BCS Bowl, not Florida. And I'm not a Gator Hater, I just think, out of the 3 teams, Florida is least deserving.
  • Let's review for a moment, Georgia played 2 BCS ranked teams, record 1-1, Alabama played 2 BCS ranked teams, record 1-1, Florida played 5 BCS ranked teams record 4-1, incase your wondering, the BCS teams Fla played were A&M, LSU, South Carolina, Georgia, and FSU. WOW least deserving? really!? If Georgia loses to Bama the only way they go to a BCS game is if they go to Sugar Bowl for a rematch vs Florida (I would love to see this matchup), so please do not say Florida is least deserving when you have nothing to back up your statement.
  • Hmm...Alabama has the weakest schedule of any BCS team. They struggled and got lucky at the end to beat a miserable, miscoached LSU and were destroyed at home by A&M????? Did Les really do a fake punt on 4th and 12 while the defense was setup for it? Did he really switch to the prevent defense that Alabama practiced for all week to lose in the last minute? Alabama should lose to GA and deserve nothing. Prior years shouldn't count in human voting. Florida lost a close game against GA, #3, and Oregon lost in OT against a BCS team. Both should be ahead of Alabama. They lost to a non-BCS at home and even struggled against Old Miss. A bad Texas team scored 66 on the bowl eligible Old Miss. Are all Alabama fans retarded? I know their school have the lowest acedamic standards of any conference. If you are too dumb to play at Texas, USC or Ohio State you can qualify to play for Bama.....roll tide!!!!!
  • "Destroyed"???
In the first quarter yes, but the last three? No. They beat themselves and had ample opportunity to win it several times. Florida played possibly the worst game I have ever seen them play against GA (for that matter, GA stunk the place up as well, but someone has to win).
Please look up the graduation stats and the academic standards for UA (by the way a certain UA QB was a Rhodes Scholar finalist). You shouldn't post without thinking.
The most recently published grad rates (from the NCAA) show that AL graduated at a better rate than all the teams you mentioned (with the notable exception of ND) in both football and basketball.

    UA 75% BB 71%
    ND 97% BB 100%
    TX 58% BB 71%
    OS 74% BB 45%
    USC 57% BB 43%

Alabama fans and graduates at least know how to research.
  • I believe Bama has to win one more game before they can play the Irish for the title. ND has there spot by winning all there games played so far, I appricate the Bama fans loyalty and welcome the cheers for there team, but you guys are not there yet, you have to beat Georgia first. Rember this is only a projection.
  • 100% agree I'm a Bama fan and sometimes I think I'm the only fan to realize we cant over look Georgia! Bama lost to A&M because they were thinking to far ahead. No matter the out come though I believe SEC will win the NC!! But this year has been very unpredictable in college football you never know!
  • what happens when Notre Dame beats Alabama? Do all of the SEC rant & ravers shut up? Or do they start i with another whole batch of blah-blah-blah like Liberals conjuring falsehoods to demean and disrespect their opponents. The response to 'Roll Tide Roll' is 'Around the bowl and down the hole!' Have a nice day
  • No...we don't shut up and ND will not beat us..put that in your pipe and smoke it cause apparently, you are smoking something!
    Roll Tide!
  • Spoken like an Auburn fan LOL!!!!
  • We realize this is a projection. However, this likely represents the outcome, as loyal and enthusiastic fans sould think. This is irrespective of what we know the strengths of our team
  • Bowl games have lost money. It will get worse. People are no longer going for the sham.

Football has lost to March Madness.
  • Alabama beats Notre Dame.
  • im from alabama and georgia will dominate bama this time sorry sukazz bama fans
  • Auburn fan no doubt...I guess I would be angry too...
  • NOTRE DAME IS BACK! GET USED TO IT SEC!
  • Get used to what? Oh! you mean playing for a championship and winning for 6 years in a row and playing for a 7th right? Well the SEC is already used to playing for a championship, so much so we schedule it annually for a SEC team to play for the championship!!!
  • sabans gonna piss in his pants win he loses to georgia
  • Okay, where's UCLA? 9-3 and #17 in hte nation is worth a bowl.
  • Projected Alamo Bowl vs. TCU December 29
  • The National Championship game is being played in Atlanta tomorrow afternoon at 4:00pm.
  • BCS = BS.
Can someone explain how a one-loss SEC team automatically gets a spot in the championship over everyone else?
Let's do the math here....Alabama loses to a just-okay A&M team with a freshman QB AT HOME, and Georgia gets their collective asses whipped 35-7 to a two-loss South Carolina team.
Meanwhile, an exciting, talented team like Oregon dominates every game on their schedule and loses to an excellent Stanford team in overtime, and they aren't even MENTIONED from that point on. One loss for every other team in the country means they're out of consideration, unless they're from the SEC, and then we get Alabama again. How many times has Alabama gotten the invite to the title game after losing during the season? Now find another team in the country that's allowed that priviledge.....go ahead, I dare you to find one.
  • Do your math again. A just Ok A&M team my ass!! They beat Bama, and lose to LSU and Florida by combined 8 pts. And they got 'em playing the horns in the cotton here. Texas won't stay within 3 touchdowns. The Ags should be in an SEC bowl.
  • That's right but A&M should be in BCS BOWL not a SEC Bowl
  • NOTRE DAME my friend there is one for you, If ND would have lost one game this season I am so sure the BCS would have found away to get ND in the title game. As far as Oregon is concerned no one wants to see them play an SEC team because the result is the same...A LOSS!!!!
  • What a joke college football has become. The love affair, promotion and the influence ESPN has with the SEC is sad. Oh yeah there is that 2 Billion dollar contract between the two. Texas A&M exposed the SEC for what it really is, an incestous league that feeds on itself. A&M was the 5th best team in the Big 12 last year and they are lighting up the SEC but when Oregon and K state lost there was a rush to get two SEC teams into second and third to make sure one would play for it all, Please.
  • A lot can change in a year. Go Ags!!! The team 'no-one wants to play"
  • Va Tech is not going to THE RUSSELL ATHLETIC BOWL!PERIOD. NC STATE is going to play Rutgers in this bowl. Va Tech did not even finish in the top 5 on that weak side of the conference while NCSU finish 3rd behind legit teams FSU & Clemson. The ACC is obligated to send their teams in a respective order. Therefore, The ACC 3rd place team goes to Orlando and that will easily be NC STATE.
  • Whoever wins will be a fraud without Ohio State in the mix. The NCAA continues to punish players for having done nothing wrong. If they want to punish the institutions financially they should institute a larger fine or an increased fine for bowl participation. The entire process for picking a national champion is tainted.
  • Bullcrap. The Georgia - Alabama game hasn't even been played. So, you show that Alabama is playing N.D.?????? I hope this will be just what puts Georgia in the position over Alabama just to prove this piece of crap above wrong!!!!! What are you going to do when Georgia wins over Alabama, keep the same list? What a joke...
  • College football needs to be very careful that it doesn't evolve into "SEC" football. I am sick of the SEC, and particularly almighty Alabama. News flash; there are other conferences and other great teams.

Why doesn't Oregon get to play in the championship game? They only lost once, just like Alabama.

If Kansas State wins out, why don't they get to the national championship game. They would only have one loss.

Where is it written that only a one loss Alabama or one loss Georgia must play in the national championship game.

I will watch some bowl games, but absolutely will not watch the national championship game since it is designed to showcase the SEC. Could care less about that game, and getting close to not caring about college football; excuse me, I mean "SEC" football.

  • You really need to know more about how the choosing of teams work, before saying anything. I don't know all about how it works but some of it is who a team plays, what their standings are, how many points are scored, and many more stats. Who can help if the SEC and Almighty Alabama are so great! We must have fit the criteria, cause here we are again! Roll Tide!
  • What they should do is have every conference have a championship game. Take the 6 major confrences (ACC, SEC, Big East, Big 10, Pac 10 and big 12) send their conference championship winner to the playoffs, have the Sports writers vote in two other conference championship winners. Then you have an 8 team playoff. As it stands now in a couple of years there will be a 4 team playoff. this only adds one more week to the season. And in reality you have a 4 week playoff considering that the conference championships are in essence a play off game as well.
  • The Irish needs to join a conference. They don't play a Championship Game like other teams do they play weak teams through out the year.SEC the best football conference there is. The Irish will not last BAMA will kill them.......
  • It's going to be interesting to see what it looks like when Georgia beats bama this weekend, I suppose they'll just bump Oregon from the Fiesta bowl and put them in the Outback bowl and put bama in the Fiesta bowl seeing as they're a much better 2 loss team than Oregon is a 1 loss team and bama is so much more deserving of having their ßutts kissed then Georgia will play ND for the NC and Georgia will win but, since bama will beat KState by such a huge margin they will be automatically elevated to the #1 spot.
  • I just believe that Ole Miss should be in a New Year's Day Bowl since we beat MSU and held our own against LSU, A&M and Bama. Mississippi State is not a good 8-4 team...and Ole Miss is the best 6-6 team in the country. We will take on any other conference champion and hold our own. Go Rebels and Bo Wallace for Heisman in 2013.
  • what a load the BCS is, could it be anymore obvious that it is all bought and paid for by the SEC?
  • Geeze, what a bunch of cry babies. If I didn't know better I would think most of these posts were submitted by a bunch of adolescence who were told they could not have their sweets before supper.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bill Belichick didn’t give many direct answers about the New England Patriots’ embarrassing 41-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, as we’ve come to expect.
