The Mets designated RHP D.J. Carrasco for assignment.

— New York Mets (@Mets) May 17, 2012

The Mets recalled LHP Robert Carson from Binghamton (AA). He had a 1.84 ERA with 1 save in 12 games for the BMets.

My Take:

Carrasco started the season on the disabled list, but recently re-joined the team. He made his 2012 major league debut on May 9. He allowed a run and two hits in an inning pitched. His next outing whent better, pitching a scoreless inning. However, it only went downhill from there. Carrasco allowed a solo homerun in one out pitched yesterday, and then he came in and allowed three runs off of six hits, including two homeruns. Basically, Carrasco allowed six runs and twelve hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched this season.

To put that into perspective, Carrasco allowed just 68 hits in 78 1/3 innings pitched back in 2010. He was 3-2 with a 3.68 ERA that season. Since then, Carrasco has been awful. Sandy Alderson signed him to a two-year, $2.4 million contract before the 2011 season.

The Mets chipped away at some of their problems by making this move.

First off, D.J. Carrasco is unfortunately not nearly as good as he used to be. The Mets could not afford having him take up a roster spot. By designating Carrasco for assignment, the solved that problem

Tim Byrdak has been used way too much this season. The Mets have played in many close games this season, against teams with solid lefties in their lineups. Tim Byrdak has done a solid job getting these guys out.

However, Byrdak has already played in 22 out of the team’s first 37 games of the season. He is on pace to appear in about 96 games in 2012. There’s absolutely no way that Byrdak will actually play that many games. However, if Terry Collins doesn’t start giving Byrdak more rest. The Byrd man could get tired sooner rather than later.Remember Pedro Feliciano? Similar situation.

The Mets have added Rob Carson. Carson is a left-handed relief pitcher–something the Mets desperately need. The only problem is that Carson has never appeared in any games above the Double-A level. Before this season, Robert Carson was unsuccessful when facing Double-A hitters. He had an 8.32 ERA when he first joined Double-A Binghamton in 10 games in 2010. In 2011, he started 24 games and pitched in relief in another one. He finished last season 4-11 with a 5.05 ERA.

Before this season, Carson was seen as a starter. But, he has completely transformed as a reliever.

The bottom line is this: Carrasco is not good anymore, Byrdak will be overworked soon, the Mets’ bullpen is terrible, the Mets need another lefty in their terrible bullpen, and Robert Carson has dominated Double-A hitters. The question is: Can Carson dominate big league hitters? There’s definitely a pretty big jump from Double-A Binghamton to the New York Mets. It’ll be interesting to see how Carson handles the situation at hand.

DJ DFA'd, Carson Promoted: Mets Matinee Lineup V. Reds - May 17, 2012

After last night's brutal Mets loss where Jon Rauch allowed an apparent win by Johan Santana slip away, the Mets designated DJ Carrasco for assignment. Santana pitched a good game, leaving with 2 outs in the seventh and a 3-2 lead.  Bobby Parnell threw a five pitch strikeout to end the inning. Then all Hell broke loose; Rauch came in and allowed 3 runs in one third of an inning. Carrasco

Terry Collins pulls David Wright and what ensued was AWESOME

The New York Mets caught a good ol’ fashion butt kicking at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night, but all of that was just a footnote to what occurred during the seventh inning.  Following a solo blast by Rickie Weeks, Mets reliever DJ Carrasco drilled Brewers slugger and last years NL MVP on the next pitch with a “sinker” in the upper part of his left shoulder...

On The Wright Track: Mets Come Back From Four Run Deficit To Win 9-4

Recap: R.A. Dickey took the hill looking for his sixth win of the year, going toe-to-toe with Reds ace Matt Latos. Dickey started off dominant, striking out six in the first four frames, but ran into trouble in the fifth after giving up a solo shot to Joey Votto in the previous inning. Come top five, Dickey gave up three runs on a hit-by-pitch, a walk, a double and a passed ball...

Mets Rainy Lineup V. Brewers - May 15, 2012

Tonight's Mets-Brewers game is in doubt due to heavy rain in the Metropolitan New York area. MLB will look to get this game in since it is the only/last time the Brew Crew are in Flushing...not like this one game will determine either teams fate this year. The Mets scored three runs on only three hits last night in defeating the Brewers 3-1. Frank Francisco was only lousy, as opposed to being

METS COME BACK FROM 4-0 AND POUND THE REDS 9 - 4  David Wright is on fire. David Wright once again is clutch and delivers the go ahead run in what became a late inning slug fest for New York. Many of us, The Blob included, have wondered over the past few season if we'd ever see David return to being the great player we once knew. Not only has the old David come back to us, but he seems to

Brew Crew Rock The Mets In 8-0 Blanking

Mets got beaten all-around tonight in an 8-0 Brewers victory. Summary Well, it was not Francisco tonight. There is no nice way to say this – we just did not have it tonight. The offense bit and Collins made one really intriguing decision… Oh, Dillon Gee was not on his game either. So the aforementioned Gee started tonight and pitched into the sixth ineffectively – allowing...

Mets Farm Teams Go 4-1 On Wednesday

Buffalo 14, Gwinnett 7  By Andrew O’Brien Matt Tuiasosopo plated two runs in the bottom of the first-inning Wednesday night with an inside-the-park home run to give the Bisons an early 2-0 lead. The Bisons never looked back, mashing 17 hits en route to a 14-7 win over the Gwinnett Braves. Tuiasosopo finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBIs and was a triple shy of the cycle. The...

An off-duty cop was dragged out of a New York Mets game in handcuffs Wednesday night after he tried to sneak into a better seat at Citi Field, police sources said.

Mets overcome 4-0 deficit to beat Reds

NEW YORK -- The day started with New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson acknowledging that the team's struggling bullpen had been a "frustrating thing" this year and saying he was exploring options to fix it. It ended with the Mets' current relievers doing their own patchwork job with three scoreless innings, and David Wright leading the Mets' offense...

BREWERS 8 - METS 0 At after getting pounded harder than Jenna Jameson in the late 1990's, Dillon Gee must ponder if his 1970's-porno-chin-mangina is throwing off his mechanics. There is not much to debate about Gee's performance tonight. It was a pitching **** storm that a struggling Brew Crew kept jamming tokens in to the Gee BP machine, until the game was quickly...

Frazier homers twice, Reds beat Mets in NY

NEW YORK (AP) -- Todd Frazier homered twice, Brandon Phillips hit a tying single off Jon Rauch in the eighth and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-3 Wednesday night. Rauch retired Chris Heisey on...

Game Preview: Reds @ Mets

The Mets seem to be in a win one lose one funk right now and look to completely put last night behind them as they take on the Reds tonight. For the Mets, it will be their second two game series in a row. Tonight the bats will look to wake up against Mike Leake as Santana gets the start for the Mets. Santana is 1-2 on the season with a 2.92 ERA over 37.0 innings and 7 starts. In...

Nothing Accomplished

I searched back into to find the complete number of times that Johan Santana had victories snatched from him by sub-par efforts by the Mets bullpen since his arrival in 2008. I searched through looking for all the times Santana left the game with the lead and came away with a no-decision. The number I came up with: three. I found three games where the Mets bullpen...
