The Hurricanes had an unexpected goalie for their first week of informal skating sessions at the RecZone, and he was no slouch.
Jeff Zatkoff, a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2006 who played for the United States at the World Junior Championships, joined the current and former Hurricanes on the ice this week, with usual practice goalie Jorge Alves in the other net.
Zatkoff, who played three years at Miami (Ohio), ended up here because his girlfriend is from Cary. He called fellow Miami product and former Hurricanes forward Kevyn Adams to see if there was anywhere he could skate. Adams put him in touch with Rod Brind'Amour, which is how Zatkoff ended up on the ice this week.
"I've spent the past three summers here, but this year instead of shacking up with her parents I got a place of my own," Zatkoff said. "It's really nice to get some ice time before I head out to Los Angeles."
