Mattheus will not need surgery but will miss time with his fractured right pitching hand. Once Mattheus’ hand heals he will have to build up arm strength. Last season Mattheus was a valuable part of the Nationals bullpen but this year he had compiled a 4.96 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 11 appearances.

We haven’t scored many runs, and shoot, it could’ve...

Nats closer rips Harper after miscue

It's been a rough couple of weeks for Nats' rising star Bryce Harper. First, there was his embarrassing face-plant into the right-field wall at Dodger Stadium. Harper tried to track down a drive off the bat of A.J. Ellis but failed to remember the important part of the term "warning track." Take a look for yourself. OK, so maybe it's wise for him not to do...

Nationals Manager Davey Johnson Says he Won’t Shave Until Team Starts Hitting

The Washington Nationals like a number of other teams that were expected to accomplish big things this season, have struggled so far. Another Sort-Of First for Bryce Harper

Even when I’m not trying to pay attention to Bryce Harper, he finds a way to capture my focus. Last night, I was seeing off a friend on the east side of Portland, and if I’d been thinking about any sport, it was hockey, since these are the days of the NHL playoffs. A TV was being projected onto one of the walls of the bar, and at first it was showing a minor-league hockey game...

Next up Washington, are they must win games?

Next up the Washington Nationals for the Memorial Day weekend. Is it too early to say these games are a must win? They are important and they might also help set the table for the season series. The Phillies who are on a two-game winning streak courtesy of Cliff Lee’s 3-0 shutout are two games back behind the second place Nationals. The bats might be coming alive, the first being...

The Davey Johnson Shave Watch is on...

And so, since Davey Johnson told reporters Friday afternoon that he wouldn't shave until the Nats start hitting, we figured we might as well start a "Davey Johnson Shave Watch" as a public service until Davey finally shaves. "I figured [the face] couldn't get any uglier, so what the heck. Hopefully, I can shave soon." (Davey Johnson, via Nationals...
