Next Step: Trade Asante

Posted July 29, 2011 on willardj's Blog:

It's becoming apparent that the Eagles won't keep two $10 mil a year corners and one $5 mil a year nickelback. The odd man out is most likely Asante.

Now what can we get for Asante? Not a lot. He's getting paid a lot of money even though he misses a lot of tackles and isn't considered a "shutdown" corner like Darrelle Revis or Nnamdi Asomugha.

The reason you want to get rid of him, however, is to free up more salary under the cap. That would enable us to sign highly touted middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch out of Tennessee, yet another Washburn coached player. Tulloch was 2nd in the NFL in tackles last season and is only 26 years old. He is the only free agent linebacker who plays in a 4-3 scheme, so he fits our needs perfectly.

Let's be honest, Andy Reid isn't going into the season starting a 4th round rookie middle linebacker (Casey Matthews) with a rookie defensive coordinator.

Like the Asomugha deal, this Asante trade and Tulloch add have already been planned out. I'm sure the general public will find out any day now.

  • Would be great if you are right and would explain why Tulloch has turned down a very good offer by the Lions and hasn't signed anywhere else yet. It would also explain why the Eagles seem fine with starting Matthews at the Mike (then again, it's early in camp) and let Bradley and every other free agent walk. After the initial shock wore down it was pretty plain to see that the Eagles had targeted Asomugha and told Samuel to skip camp. Too much of a coincidence that Asomugha signed with the Eagles as soon as the true free agency period started. We have to keep in mind though that it will take some pretty nice deals to give both Jackson and Vick what they want.
  • Samuel 4 haynesworth. . . . . Let's make a deal.
  • Eagles let Bradley walk, and Casey Matthews is repping with the Ones.

I think Reid will let the preseason, not a draft positon, decide if Matthews starts or he goes back to Chaney.
  • That's the thing. Manual already has Chaney starting on the strongside. So right now, there is no backup middle linebacker (besides some unknown undrafted rookie). This has led me to believe that Reid has a plan to acquire a middle linebacker in a trade for Samuel, or to get rid of Samuel's salary to then be able to add a middle linebacker via free agency.
  • Wow... I just said Manual. I guess I'm still in Phillies mode.
  • Good reason. We just got Pence!
  • WAIT! DON'T TRADE ASANTE SAMUELS!
  • Agree. How nice would it be for the eagles to be able to match up favorably with the packers receivers. i feel with nnamdi on one side and samuel on the other the qb will have to try to force throws towards asante which gives him plenty of opportunities to ballhawk and create those big plays.
  • We can still match up favorably without Asante. You don't need a DRC to stop Jordie Nelson. Joselio Hanson is good enough.
  • so you trade Asante - then who is our 4th receiver? Do we even have one? I mean one that deserves to be on the team!
  • I don't remember seeing anyone concerned about his age. You're not making things up, are you sucker? The comments I saw had more to do with the Cowboys (and a couple barkers had Eagle concerns) not having any room to make any more moves if they signed Asomugha. Seems like the Eagles are doing okay and it helps that they signed Asomugha at a more cap friendly amount than what a lot of analysts had him signing for. It's a beautiful thing! Lets keep it real buddy.
  • All I ever said was I didnt want to pay too much money for him and not be able to address other positions, since a cb doesnt cover the whole field. But it looks like the FO is working out ways to get him AND address others. Fine by me.
  • He actually took less than what was expected. He'll 12 mill per year whe it was thought that he would demand at least 15.
  • Truth is Nnamdi always wanted to be an Eagle and the feeling was mutual. The Eagles told his agent not to agree to anything until the talked with them. The Cowboys and Jets were just negotiating for the Eagles while the Eagles signed other players. Genius!
  • And the Eagles didn't pay too much for him Randall and they have addressed other concerns (DE, back-up quarterback, Back-up TE, possible returner, punter:I know Henry is an undrafted rookie but I still love that move, had to throw it in LOL). The kicker is that now they have an extra piece (Samuel and maybe those extra draft picks:they also have an extra 4th for moving back in this years draft) to possibly bring in another player to make a run. Most exciting offseason since probably...2004?
  • i would like to know what the number is they are right now under the cap. Personally Why Sign the Asom---- if you could have just signed this guy Tulluch. Do you really value the Asom---- that much more then Asante?

Personally. I think the Eagles keep all 3CBs if not them Trading Asante for Draft picks just doesn't make sense to me. They are clearly building to win it all right now. Not so much as trading a player away for draft picks.
  • Nnamdi is a better player than Asante. He is a better man up cover guy, better tackler, a he is capable of lining up anywhere and taking the other teams best receiver out of the game. Asante can do none that. It's why teams would simply put their best guy on the other side against the Eagles. That's not to say Asante is bad, quite the contrary. I do wonder how much is left under the cap. Moves still need to be made and a few restructuring of current deals may need to be done in order to keep all three and resign Vick and Jackson. I'm not concerned about it though.
  • I'm not going to sit here and pretend Samuel is better then Nnamdi that would be absurd, as he is the best corner in the league. I just can't disagree, but Samuel is still a top 5 CB and it just doesn't warrant goin after a guy like Nnamdi unless your planning on keeping both. If they trade anyone I think they trade DRC. (just my opinion)

But again, I don't think anything is out there to warrant trading their CBS away.
  • Well they still might keep all three. All I know is this defense is now just as much of a nightmare for teams as this offense. This is the closest this team has been in offensive and defensive talent in a long time. The sky is the limit for them.
  • There is no excuse this year for the offense or the defense.
  • Not really unless they have some untimely injuries.
  • think we need to keep all three. keep the defense as strong as possible. we dont know how long it will take to sign desean or for maclin to get better. sal pal is saying he might have mono again.
  • Samuel is reportedly on the trading block. Apparently the Bengals and Panthers are already interested.
  • wat would the Bengals or Panthers have to offer.. Dhani Jones? lol
  • who is reporting this? Not questioning you, just want to check it out.
  • I read a report a few days ago saying the Panthers were interested. However, I now just read a report 45 minutes ago saying they aren't interested. Basically what I do for football rumors is I search "philadelphia Eagles" or "Asante Samuel" into google news and see what pops up.

Do you know any good NFL rumor sites? I know mlbtraderumors is a good one for the MLB, but I have yet to find anything good for the NFL.
  • It's sounds as if Asante doesn't want to leave, but I'm wondering how will the Eagles get by (cap wise) with all that money locked up at corner. Honestly I shouldn't care. I'm just going on this ride.
  • May have to move him to insure they can get Jackson and Vick done. If so hopefully it's for a player (RT, linebacker, even a veteran safety). Have to go for broke now. Either way it's all good!
  • Yup and you know what I don't care how they do it. I just hope they do it. Right now you have to consider Samuel and DRC kind of just luxuries right now, but Asante is a very expensive luxury.
  • BTW I would not trade Asante unless I could get something that would help me win now. Jeff Otah (If he's healthy) and a draft pick maybe?
  • Would the Panthers give up on him this early even with his knee? I highly doubt it.
  • Wouldn't that be full circle though? Wasn't he the Kolb trade pick? The think about the NFL is that it always keeps moving. Today's All Pro is tomorrow's cap casualty. To go a full season and not see a guy play can drastically hinder the teams perception of the player especially if the guy who replaced him is putting in work. Last year Brandon Graham was a talented starting rookie. This year if he plays it will be as a rotational backup. So do I think the Panthers would give up on him? Highly unlikely, but remember there are connections there. RR their head coach used to work for Andy as did their DC (that guy) so there is always a chance something could go down.
  • we tarded with dallass when we got kolb. they got anthony spencer.
  • Oh that's right! My bad.
  • I'd certainly welcome it and you would think as a twenty something pick (or was 19th?) with no bonus to worry about, he would certainly be affordable but I can't see it happening. Then again, I didn't see Asomugha happening nor Jenkins. .
  • Yeah me too. Watch this!

  • I heard the rant before but it's even funnier with the pictures. I didn't watch it all but will check it out later.
  • Yo that was crazy tho! That just shows how dangerous they can be.
  • ...and how crazy they can make their rivals' fans!
  • I kind of felt bad for the guy. He had a complete meltdown on the air it seems.
  • The Eagles traded the Panthers their pick for what turned out to be either Jackson or Laws in the second round and ended up getting Peters the next year with the extra 1st round pick.
  • the pick we got from them was traded back n then back again i believe. i remember watching the draft saying pick desean already. n i dont care who wants to believe that i said for a year before we got him we needed him.
  • It went to Buffalo for Peters although maybe Carolina ended up getting it from them. No reason not to believe you wanted Jackson. I must admit that I liked the pick but would have preferred a bigger receiver. Like I have stated before, what the hell do I know?
  • yea i was thinkin of the second round pick we got from them. cause we got their second that year then their 1st and second the next. the first was for peters n then the second the same year kept getting traded back
  • Man that's right. 2 number ones for Peters.... Such a steep price.
  • well the fact that DJax is by far the best WR that came out of his draft class I would say it was the right pick. Everyone else was a bust.
  • only one number one. we traded our first a 4th and a 6th in 2010 in 2009 for peters. in 2008 we traded our first with carolina for their 2008 second 2009 1st and 2009 2nd. desean went in 2008 we kept trading back before we selected that year trevor laws and 2 picks later desean. skins got TE Fred Davis inbetween our picks
  • My bad...mistook your last comment. The Eagles could have kept moving back. They took a 2nd in the 2009 draft and made it a 5th (Ingram, I think) and a few other picks before they were done. Definitely something they have done more of recently.

    Wow.
