According to Aftonbladet's Stefan Holm and Johannes Hagglund, HV71 Jonkoping coach Ulf Dahlen asked former Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom whether he'd be interested in making an abbreviated comeback in the Swedish Eliteserien. HV71's assistant coach, Thomas Ljungbergh, made a sales pitch to Lidstrom after HV suffered a slate of injuries to their best defensemen, but Lidstrom turned them down, just as he (theoretically) turned down the Wings when they asked him if he'd be willing to return for the 2013 season. What follows is roughly translated from Swedish: "He's the best defenseman. Every team would want him. Had we'd gotten him, we would have been thrilled, but he said he didn't have the hunger," said Ljungbergh. For Lidstrom, it was never realistic to consider a comeback. "I miss the driving force [necessary to play], and said that it's going really well in terms of what I'm doing now," he said.   ...

Brian Lashoff Signs 3-Year Extension With Detroit Red Wings

Brian Lashoff has done everything Mike Babcock and the Detroit Red Wings have asked of him since he was pressed into duty in an injury-depleted defensive corps. Monday, the Wings rewarded the 22-year-old blue liner. Howard dishes shutout in much-needed win

DETROIT You see it so often when the playoffs roll around but it's nearly as true in this shortened NHL season the goaltender is the most important player. For the injury-depleted Detroit Red Wings, that is more true than ever. True, Wings goalie Jimmy Howard can't help the team's struggling power play, but if he prevents the other team from scoring, the Wings will...

Wings sign Lashoff to three-year deal

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Brian Lashoff to a three-year, 2.175 million contract. The team announced the move Monday. Lashoff has a goal and two assists in 15 games this season, his first in the NHL. The 22-year-old native of Albany, N.Y., has made the most of his opportunities to fill in for banged-up defenseman in Detroit. The undrafted...

Lashoff Signs Three Year Deal - $725K per.

Like Brian Lashoff?  Well hopefully the answer was yes, because he's here to stay for a bit.  Lashoff received some security on Monday, when the Red Wings signed him to a three-year, $2.175 million extension. It's a one-way deal (NHL-salary only) all three years, with a salary-cap hit of $725,000. “He's played 18-to-20 minutes a night and a lot of nights he’s...

Red Wings overnight report: on realignment, Helm’s back and Brunner

I'm going to start an entry I wouldn't normally write with a set of announcements I normally wouldn't state: 1. I may or may not split up recaps and overnight reports from now on, depending on your feedback. I've done so for the Wings-Predators and now the Wings-Canucks games simply because there's so much going on during the weekends in terms of notes, quotes...

Red Wings-Canucks quick take: what a difference a day makes

On Saturday afternoon, Red Wings fans were nervous...Or at least I was. The Wings were heading into a Saturday night tilt against Nashville in a must-must-win situation, having gone 0-3-and-2 over their past five games. Saturday night, the Wings smoked Nashville 4-0, and we all felt a little better. After the first period of today's game against Vancouver, Wings fans were...

Canucks vs Red Wings Recap: 2.24.2013

Games like this, they just make me so happy. Early on it looked like it might be a long night with the Sedin twins playing nauseatingly great hockey, but Detroit took over in the second with, get this: our special teams. Not only did they score three with the man advantage, they didn’t give up any to a hot Vancouver power play. Awesome. More after the jump: Last night...

Stupid Nashville vs Red Wings Recap: 2.23.2013

Good win tonight. These recaps are a heck of a lot more fun to write than the losses. Though Nashville controlled the play for what seemed like the majority of the game, Howard was the difference, much like the last win against the Kings. I didn’t see any one player play poorly tonight, but I saw plenty of guys give their all. More after the jump: Murph said that Babcock...

The Health Of The Wings

Paul here for George as he waits for his laptop to be fixed.  Maybe later today or tomorrow is the estimated time. from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Every visit to a doctor keeps yielding the same information: Detroit Red Wings forward Darren Helm just needs time to heal from his back injury. Helm hasn't played hockey in a month, hasn't even skated...

Red Wings-Canucks game-day updates: Gustavsson’s out and injury updates; Bieksa out for Vancouver

The Detroit Red Wings will face off against the Vancouver Canucks this afternoon (5 PM, FSD/Sportsnet West/97.1 FM) minus their designated starter for the day. As Paul noted, the Wings recalled Tom McCollum and will start Jimmy Howard instead of Jonas Gustavsson due to a "sore groin," though Wings GM Ken Holland told the Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness that the team&...

Red Wings-Predators wrap-up: slump busted?

The Detroit Red Wings' 4-0 victory over the Nashville Predators may or may not have been a command performance, but the Red Wings were able to rely on Jimmy Howard's superb netminding while finding their "legs," and while Drew Miller's 1-0 goal gave the Wings some tentative poise, Tomas Tatar's 2-0 goal 2:58 into the 2nd period seemed to put the Wings on...

Red Wings Out-Power Canucks in 8 – 3 Victory

[show_scoreboard scbd_id="4"]   After a shaky first period, the Red Wings all but destroy the Vancouver Canucks in an 8 - 3 victory, leading into two days off. Jimmy Howard got his confidence boosted early with a spectacular save on Maxim Lapierre’s early breakaway. Vancouver then opened the scoring at 5:45 on a wrist shot from Daniel Sedin. The Red...

Predators go scoreless again, lose in Detroit 4-0

The Nashville Predators were shutout once again for the second straight night as they fall 4-0 to the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. Unable to convert on the many chances they had, the Predators couldn’t put a shot past Jimmy Howard, who recorded his first shutout of the season by stopping all 33 shots that came his way. Not only did Nashville lose the game, but...
