Detroit Red Wings need to get tougher to compete in East

Jordin Tootoo was a fighter for the Wings, a fighter they could have used last night in Ottawa(Photo Credit: Rick Osentoski / USA TODAY Sports) After an embarrassing 6-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators on October 23rd, Red Wings fans expected Henrik Zetterburg and company to come out swinging last night in Detroit. Not many, however, expected Ottawa to literally beat them to the punch...

Red Wings overnight report: on Cleary, Helm, Alfredsson, Osgood, a book tour and a ‘walk of fame’

The Detroit Red Wings took an "off day" after playing back-to-back games over the weekend (losing to Ottawa on Saturday and winning against Buffalo on Sunday), and no practice meant a little trip to Montreal for Wings coach Mike Babcock, who was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by McGill University (and fielded a few Canadian Olympic team roster queries) but no practice...

Khan’s update on Pavel Datsyuk: no news is no news regarding the Red Wings fowrard’s cobwebs

Via RedWingsFeed, MLive's Ansar Khan offers an update on Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk's status, and it sounds like Wings fans will have to wait until Tuesday's practice to find out whether Datsyuk has recovered from Jared Cowen's unpenalized and non-disciplined elbow to #13's jaw to the point that Datsyuk can pass his baseline neurological test and return to...

Windsor Star’s Duff offers a pre-review of former Red Wing Darren McCarty’s memoir

Red Wings pro scout Mark Howe's been on something of a "book tour" promoting what the Utica Observer-Dispatch's Don Laible reports is a very revelatory memoir in, Gordie Howe's Son: A Hall of Fame Life in the Shadow of Mr. Hockey, and the Detroit News had reported that Darren McCarty's going to spend a decent chunk of December visiting Michigan to promote...

A presser regarding the Red Wings’ annual Children’s Hospital visit & a Winter Festival ‘live cam’

As an FYI, from the Wings' PR department: RED WINGS START HOLIDAYS OFF WITH VISIT TO DMC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF MICHIGAN ON NOV. 26 … Coach Babcock and Entire Red Wings Team to be in Attendance Tuesday … DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings will start off the 2013 holiday season by visiting the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at...

Detroit News’s Aguilar: Land to be used in Wings follow-on rink, surrounding developent cost $48 mil

As the Ilitches have amassed land behind the Fox Theatre and are now gobbling up mostly empty lots southeast of the Masonic Temple, Michigan sports fans have been asking a question for a good twenty years now: "I wonder what they're going to build here, and I wonder how much all of this stuff cost them?" We know the former answer--the Wings' follow-on rink will...

Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk ‘out’ vs. Bruins

This is about the worst news I can deliver you this morning regarding one Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk, from MLive's Ansar Khan... Datsyuk not practicing today. — Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) November 26, 2013 Ken Holland said Datsyuk had been ruled out for Wednesday's game vs. Boston. — Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) November 26, 2013 The...

Red Wings Tuesday practice post: No Datsyuk, no Bertuzzi vs. B’s, Gustavsson starts

Okay, so the Red Wings will be without Pavel Datsyuk when they play against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday as the NHL is on the "Rob Ford Plan" when it comes to supplemental discipline (i.e. they're on crack). MLive's Ansar Khan, the Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness and the Free Press's Helene St. James confirmed the news in article form: Detroit Red Wings...

Red Wings prospect Jake Paterson, OHL surprised as Russians take 2 Subway Super Series games

The Russians tend not to send their best Major Junior prospects across the pond for the CHL's Subway Super Series, and as such, it's something of a toss-up as to whether the six-game battle between the Russian major-junior-aged representatives and a trio of QMJHL, OHL and WHL All-Star teams are competitive or whether they're something of a rout. This year's a little...

Red Wings-Sabres wrap-up and overnight report: Doctor Babs’ team earns a gritty win

Before we begin, I had to shake my head at this pre-no-suspension-warranted take on Jared Cowen's elbow to Pavel Datsyuk's jaw (He's okay! We hope!) from the Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson... Nice Jared Cowen elbow to Pavel Datsyuk’s jaw Saturday that on-ice officials overseeing the Ottawa Senators-Detroit Red Wings clash somehow missed. “He had the puck...

Red Wings Weekend Recap 11.25.13

The Wings played twice this weekend and came away with two points. I’d say “I’ll take it” but I think they can do so much better. This post will mostly just touch on the important things that happened in both games. More after the jump: Pavel Datyuk’s status is still unknown after taking an unpunished elbow from Jared Cowen. Lame. The loss to the Senators...

Red Wings-Sabres Preview

The Detroit Red Wings didn't expect to be keeping close company with the Buffalo Sabres when they switched to the Eastern Conference. Since Nov. 3, that's exactly what they've done as the first-year Atlantic Division foes have combined for 13 points in the last three weeks. The Red Wings and Sabres are two of four NHL teams with seven points or less in that span, and...
