ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It was an era Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon learned to appreciate ... after it was gone. Saturday was "Disco Night" at Tropicana Field for the Rays' game against the Houston Astros. The Rays have been well-versed in theme nights this season -- "Turn Back the Clock Night" (a 1970s appreciation) and "Star Trek Into Darkness Night" have been a few -- but disco was on display in the latest themed event. Some of the sights and sounds were tremendous. Music from the era was played throughout the evening, and before the game, Rays players were introduced on the videoboard behind right field as if they had donned their best disco-era threads. A KC and the Sunshine Band concert, part of the Rays Summer Concert Series, was scheduled to cap the night. What does Maddon think of a time gone by? "It became more of a favorite era of mine after it was over," he said. "When you're actually living the era, I was kind of the anti-disco guy. (I was) more rock 'n' roll, long hair. I was always appreciative of how the women dressed during that era, though. But from my perspective, it was never about going out with my disco outfit, my polyester and the shirt open down to your navel with the chains. That was never part of my gig. "But again, (I was) always appreciative of watching the young ladies and how they would react to the disco night." Here is how Maddon looked on the videoboard when they were introduced. Check out the scoreboard image for tonight. It's Disco Night.
