The Northwestern Wildcats pulled off a huge home victory over #12 Minnesota Golden Gophers. If the Wildcats want to make this the season they go dancing for the first time in school history, they will need more marquee wins like this one. What was missing from Wednesday night’s thrilling win, the students. Against a nationally ranked opponent, with an 8 pm start time, the Wildcats tipped off in front of about 75 students. How do I know this number? I was there and I was able to count every student in the student section one by one. For those of you quick to jump to the student section’s defense, no it did not fill up as the game went on, 75 was about it. You can count for yourself in this picture. It will be hard to make it to the NCAA tournament with home court showings like this one, but if Welsh-Ryan Arena gets full, it can really get rocking. var conf_57503 = { APIKey: '2_N1YlfjHIEAtyRAK3CAYRE5a1aBuANuMOCLc_7hsOQ13HnwCrW_u-6OuDhjC7vR06 ', lang : 'en...

Condon adds scoring touch to second line

MINNEAPOLIS Departing for the holiday break in December, Minnesota Gophers junior forward Nate Condon was given an assignment from hockey coach Don Lucia. "Go home and find 10 goals laying around the house when you're on break," Condon recalled Wednesday of Lucia's pre-break message. With just three goals in the season's first 17 games, Condon wasn't giving...

Did the Minnesota and North Dakota series become more tame?

Ralph Engelstad Arena  The Minnesota and North Dakota hockey series is one of the best rivalries in college hockey. Unfortunately, this past weekend was the final regular season WCHA series between the University of Minnesota and The University of North Dakota. There will be no more of these regular season battles. The Rivalry has been likened by some as the...

Smith, Minnesota strive to reduce turnovers

MINNEAPOLIS After losing two straight games against highly ranked opponents, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have identified a common denominator: too many turnovers. Minnesota trailed Indiana by 23 at halftime before a second-half surge fell just short. In that game at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, the Gophers turned the ball over 17 times. A few days later against No. 5 Michigan...

Swopshire plays role of catalyst for Cats

At Louisville, forward Jared Swopshire was just a role player for a team loaded with talent. On this Northwestern squad, the fifth-year senior must be a leader. In the Wildcats' 55-48 victory over No. 12 Minnesota, they wouldn't have won without Swopshire.

Alex Bentley added 12 points as the Lady Lions (16-2, 6-0 Big Ten) hung for their 10th straight win despite struggling from the field. The Gophers (13-7, 2-4) had a chance to take the lead twice late with the...

Northwestern upsets #12 Gophers, in front of very poor student showing

Every year Northwestern Wildcats basketball beats a couple ranked teams during the Big Ten slate. So whenever they play someone good at home you want to be there so you can see a big event, right? Like when the fans stormed the court after taking down a top ten Michigan State team last year. Well the “Wildside” student section doesn’t seem to think so. They hardly showed...

Weekend Match-Ups (by Donn)

First I would like to thank the UW Badgers for splitting with Miami, the Goon now owes me a beer!  Second I would like to thank the Minnesota announcer, McCloud, for on Friday night, the used the “S” word, and admitted it would take time to get over using the word Sioux, dang, I said it too.
