Coach Brian Kelly stepped into the kind of controversy that can only happen at Notre Dame when he declared on Thursday that “Field turf is coming to Notre Dame.” It took less than a day and a great deal of moaning from some of our more traditional minded brethren out there in the Notre Dame fan community for Coach Kelly to “clarify” (retract) those comments.
Coach Kelly said the following at a press conference on Friday:
“I want to go back on that one a little bit, and I want to add one word. I said, ‘field turf is coming.’ I want to say I hope field turf is coming. And as you all know, and I’ve said this a million times, that’s above my pay grade. I’m not the one who’s rolling out the turf.”
This is not the first time Kelly’s mentioned the need to move to an artificial surface. As a coach who made his name coaching high octane, no huddle spread offenses, it is very easy to see why he would want his team to play on a surface more conducive to that style of offense. And as the South B
