Will Matt Flynn be one of the true enigma’s of the NFL this season? He was a backup in Green Bay for four seasons in Green Bay before becoming a free agent and signing with Seattle to be their starter in 2012.Russell Wilson beat him out in camp and again, Flynn carried a clipboard. This offseason, Flynn was traded to Oakland and is now “thriving” in the Raiders' offense, according to NFL.com.But we really do not know who the “real” Matt Flynn is. Is he the guy who has played sparingly in five NFL seasons and looks the part, but does not have the resume? Or, is he the guy who  threw for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns in the 45-41 victory, both of which set all-time Green Bay Packers records? The Raiders are hoping for the guy who is a record-setter and one who can lead the offense to wins and compete in what will be a very tight AFC West division. That alone makes him an overrated and an underrated player at the same time. The Raiders also need him to be a leader considering the running game is not as solid as it could be. Darren McFadden returns, but he is always an injury risk and Rashad Jennings was injured last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars before signing a free agent contract on the west coast. It looks like both Flynn and head coach Dennis Allen could have plenty of sleepless nights if the offense cannot get it going. But still, is the Flynn the Raiders are getting the one who can have record-setting games each week?I am reminded of a trade similar to this one that paid off for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and all but messed up the Buffalo Bills.Rob Johnson was a backup in Jacksonville when Mark Brunell was injured in 1997. Johnson looked like a Pro Bowler, throwing for 300 yards in the team’s win. That prompted the team to trade Johnson in the offseason for a first round pick in the 1998 Draft. Johnson was a colossal bust in Buffalo and the ninth pick in the 1998 Draft was Fred Taylor.I am sure you get my point when I say you don’t really know what you are getting based on a few good performances. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a full season to identify if a backup who has spent most of his career holding a clipboard will be the right guy to lead the Raiders to the promised land.Remember, this is also the same position Aaron Rodgers was in while waiting behind Brett Favre.I guess we will all wait and see what happens.
