Offseason Check List

Posted January 17, 2011 on willardj's Blog:

1. Rebuild coaching team on defense

This means find an experienced defensive coordinator that runs an aggressive zone-blitzing 4-3. Then have him bring in his own people that can coach the d-line, linebackers, and secondary. We do this by firing Shuey, Caldwell, and Zordich and having Dick Jauron go to the Browns.

2. Rebuild offensive line

We need to try and find a right tackle on the free agent market that can immediately step in over Justice and protect Vick's blind side. We can also use a high draft pick on a right guard. We let Reggie Wells walk.

3. Decide on a starting QB

Vick will be up for grabs. We need to make a good enough offer that the Raiders can't match. Then we can try to use Kolb to trade up in the draft to acquire a good right guard.

4. Mix Up Defensive Personnel

We need to let Stewart Bradley go and use a decently high draft pick on a middle linebacker that can compete with Jamar Chaney during training camp. Keenan Clayton should replace Sims at WILL so we should draft an outside linebacker to have in the mix. We then will resign Quintin Mikell and Darryl Tapp. We should then have enough money to look at a free agent right cornerback replacement so that Dmitri Patterson can play in the nickel.

5. Resign Akers

It's difficult to find a good kicker in the NFL. Keep Akers around and maybe draft someone as a kickoff specialist so that Akers' leg doesn't wear out.

  • 1. I am all for rebuilding our defensive coaching staff from the ground up.

    2. I'm not in love w/ Winston Justice either, but I don't need to find his replacement this year. It just not that high on my list. (RG IS THOUGH)

    3. It's most likely going to be Vick for next season (if there is one) if there isn't a next season, I think they are going Kolb. That being said, I don't think we need to trade Kolb in order to acquire a RG in the draft. Currently the Eagles have the 23rd pick well before RG's typically go. Pouncey should still be there when the Eagles have the selection and I think he will fit in nicely here.

    4. Your crazy on getting rid of Stewart Bradley. You can never judge a player 1 year after the ACL injury. If he doesn't come back to full play by next season, then i would be with yyou. I just think your to quick to judge.

I'm also not in love w/ Keenan Clayton. Unless he puts on 10 pounds anyways. The man would not hold up over the season.

    5. They better resign akers.
  • i think their big offseason move should be signing logan mankins off the pats whenever there is FA. i think we should keep bradley as our SAM with chaney in the middle. adding someone for competition is a given. adding a CB i think is number one problem, well behind hiring a good DC.
  • Well that would certainly be a great signing. It sounds like he had some real contract issues last year and held out a while. Hopefully Lurie and Banner are willing to pay up.

would be nice if we would actually step up and sign a few big name FAs this year.....if we don't....same result.
  • Damn, we have a lot of cap space. We'll see what that figure is after resigning Vick, Jackson, Mikell, and others. But we should be able to AT LEAST sign Logan Mankins.

That works out perfectly for us, because right guard is easily our biggest need right now. All that releasing of players last season is finally going to pay off!
  • Eagles have been dropping players that cost money for the past 2 years now. Its sorta what has been pissing me off about the organization (TO FREAKIN CHEAP)

That being said, there is a lot of players currently on
the team, that are gonna wanna get paid this year.
And the Jeremy Maclin & Desean Jackson deals are going
to spur crap in the locker room eventually.
  • i wouldnt trust BR. its just a blog. thats like using this site for valid info. should the eagles have alot of cap space? yeah, but 60mil? i dont know about that.
  • ive been saying mankins since the start of last offseason when he was a FA and the Pats Franchised him and then he refused to sign a long term deal.
  • I was watching some film on him. Man he just wiped guys out. Do you think signing him and moving Herremans to RT would make the line better?
  • I wouldn't do that. Mankins has experience at RG so I would him there and draft a RT. I personally don't see why peters can't move to RT to protect Vicks blindside. My only guess would be his footwork gets messed up. I played both tackle positions and switching in games would mess up my feet but these guys are suppose to be better than my ass.
  • I love the idea of gettin someone in here better then Winston Justice just like everybody else, I just don't see it happening this year. There are just to many holes on this team then RT.

    1. CB
    2. OG
    3. DE
    4. OLB

Every year the Eagles adress the right positions but they never put a lot of money into them nor do they take a lot of high draft choices. I mean last year when we traded down the second round pick for 200 5th rounders was absurd.
  • Well you have to remember that it took Peters over a year to figure the Eagles blocking scheme. They completely changed his technique. They also took away his strength witch was run blocking. Putting him on the other side may cause him to regress a little more. Herremans is a massive man with a little bit of a nasty attitude like Runyan used to be. He was drafted as a tackle, but they moved him to guard. I figured if they move him to the outside and sign Mankins you could almost get away with using McGlynn or Reggie Wells at LG and you wont have to use a rookie to protect Vick's blind side. The line would be Peters (LT) McGlynn/Wells (LG) Jackson (C) Mankins (RG) Herremans (RT)
  • if we are able to sign mankins and draft pouncey we would be set. we could go Peters, Mankins, Jackson, Pouncey, Herremans. but to move a pro bowl caliber LG to RT now i dont think is worth it. its like u said about peters how much of a step back would he take? just moving the guard problem over is a bigger deal i think. for the most part this season justice has outplayed the RG whoever it was. now im no justice fan but i think the interior line is a bigger problem than the tackles.
  • I get what you're with the learning, but Todd is smart and versatile. He might be the only guy on the line who could handle a position change. Still not the biggest fan of having a rookie protect Vick's blind side. I guess we will see what happens.

Here is a write up on Herremans draft scouting report.
  • Bradley will be looking for money. I'd rather hold that money for someone else when you have a stud like Chaney on your team. It's not worth having Bradley as your starting MLB all through camp, only to have him leave with an injury.

He's a good, solid player when healthy. It's just not worth the risk IMO.
  • Anybody that would pay Bradley big money would be dumb. The guy has yet to show he can stay healthy and he has been a average player at best when healthy.
  • I can't imagine Bradley getting offers from a lot of people outside philly at this point though either. He didn't have a strong season and is showing he is injury prone. I feel the Eagles will sign him to a 1 year or 2 year deal w/ a lot of incentives.
  • Yeah I don't see anyone signing a guy who hasn't done much on the field and has had two season ending injuries.
  • Yeah. Enough with this mentality that Bradley is this great player. I do think he could move to the SAM and be effective though.
  • If they dont resign Vick, there is no reason to continue the dialogue
  • http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/Vick_originally_.html

Vick wants to be here, even said he wouldnt mind a franchise tag for one year. As long as there is football, Vick will be an Eagle next year.
  • The entire offensive line doesn't need rebuilding. It's really the RG and Center position that had the most problems. Justice had a rough game against Green Bay but we didn't hear his name all year. So that's a good thing for an o-lineman. It's more important to fix the RG and if Jackson is healthy and ready to go next year then the line should be a lot better. Draft some guards to groom.

They already decided on the starter. Vick is going to be here and starting. Period.

Bradley will move to his natural position at the SAM and Chaney will play the middle with Fokou on playing the weak. Definitely not a playmaking group but can be a solid group with size and speed.

We need a corner oppposite of Samuel. SafetIES because Mikell sucks and probably will be gone and Allen will be coming back from a serious injury. If would have picked Earl Thomas like we should have then we would be fine there. So now we need a safety and STILL need a DE. Just sad stuff. The entire defense is in shambles.
  • Just because we did not hear Justice name called a lot doesn't mean he had a really good year. I think his benching in the playoff game was the evidence that the coaches saw enough of him.
  • Truth be told, he had a horrible game against the packers. he has had trouble against top DE's all season long and it's clear he is nothing better then an average player.

I just don't think its possible to fill all the holes we have on top of a OT position. (maybe Dunlap starts next year) He honestly looked a lot better this season then in years past and seemed to get better with the more snaps he had.
  • Dunlap? Thats a joke
  • Its more like a dream lol. He has the intangibles actually and he would have been a much higher draft pick if he played hard his last season in college.

He wasn't bad filling in for Winston Justice in that GreenBay game. granted, he didn't look so hot in some other games he filled in nicely at the end.

Either way, You guys are looking for a ProBowl RT and your not going to get one this offseason.
  • Did you see what happened to Queen when he got into the game?
  • He shouldn't even be in the league. Too tall to play tackle and too fat to play TE and too slow to play anything on defense line.
  • I agree. But in offensive lineman terms that's better than having your name constantly mentioned. For the most part he played a solid season. I didn't say overwhelmingly good or anything but solid. He played bad in the playoff game so he got benched. If he played so bad during the year, I'm sure he would have got bench then too.
  • Scorpio, did you watch the Bears Seahawks game? I'll stick with Nate Allen. Thank you.

And I agree EZ. I've looked at some advanced o-line stats. Peters, Herremens, and McGlyn are all in the top 10 in rushing yards on their side. Then MJG and Justice are both in the 20's. Those are the two positions that we've observed as being bad and are statistically bad. Let's replace them.
  • Everyone on WIP is freaking out that we passed Earl Thomas and picked up Brandon Graham. Lets throw this out there:

Say the Eagles moved up to pick Earl Thomas. Then who do we pick in the second round? Do we get LUCKY and pick up a CB that can step in right away?

I'm just saying, there were 4 very highly coveted safeties coming out in the draft and I would have been happy with any one of them. Nate Allen stepped in and played at a very VERY high level for being a rookie and it's a shame he got injured.

Now you can hate on Brandon Graham all you want, but 90 percent of DE's don't start showing who they really are until the second and third year. People didn't think highly of Mario Williams until his second year. So lets give him a chance here. I realize he just got an ACL tear and might not even PLAY next season so things aren't looking so hot right now, but the fact is (The Jury Is still OUT)

I think if we go DE in the draft then theres a great chance in 2 years from now we have 2 stud DE's (Brandon Graham and (new guy)
  • Ok so Earl Thomas didn't play well against the Bears in the playoffs. Shocker. Nate Allen played like 3 good games the entire year. He spend the rest of the year getting run over by running backs and being out of position in passing coverage. Earl Thomas will be a better safety for the duration of their careers. Book it.
  • Apart from the Tennessee game when was Nate Allen ever out of position? There were virtually no deep passes against us this year in a large part due to Nate Allen. Nate Allen had a very good year for a rookie.

And I'm sure you've watched all of the Seahawks games which is why you know Thomas had a better year. Am I right?

  • Are you crazy? Nate Allen was the one on Hobbs side when both of them were looking terrible. He has an ok year but nothing spectacular. He played well in a few games and the rest of the year did nothing then got injured. He hit the wall in the middle of the year. Earl Thomas is better than him. Period. Everyone the Eagles pick isn't the best player in their position. So stop drinking the koolaid.

Thomas has more tackles and more INTs. Allen got all 3 of his INTs within the 1st 4 weeks and did nothing after that. And he is now injury prone. I get it. You want to defend everything Andy does. You are certainly at liberty to do so. But I won't.

He messed up trading up for Brandon Graham. Nate Allen wasn't a bad pick at all. That's not what I'm saying. But the defense would have been much better off with Thomas there because Brandon Graham contributed almost nothing. You could have got the same production from a DE in the second round with a better safety.

And by the way, I saw quite a few Seahawk games. Sunday ticket allows that to happen. I'm sure I've seen him more than you. So what do you know about him? Let me answer that. Nothing.
  • Nate Allen is soft. He needs to put some muscle weight on. The injury he has right now may keep him out most of 2011 I think I read that.
  • hes built but plays like a fish
  • Saying, "Are you crazy? Earl Thomas is way better" doesn't make Earl Thomas better. From what I've observed as a fan and from what I've heard from analysts, Nate Allen had a very good year.

Congrats you watched 4 Seahawks games. I'm sure that makes you an Earl Thomas expert considering the safety gets cut off on the TV anyway. Having more tackles doesn't make you a better safety. Nor does having more interceptions. If you look at all of the games where Thomas had a high number of tackles, the Seahawks gave up a lot of points or lost. If you look at all of the games where Allen had a high number of tackles, we gave up a lot of points or lost.

If teams aren't throwing or running your way, you did your job as a safety. Let's say the Bears complete a long pass on Thomas and Thomas makes the tackle, but then Nate Allen is right there so that Jay Cutler decides not to make the throw. Thomas gets credit with the tackle, Allen doesn't. See my point?

Really the only way you can judge them is to study the film. I'm going to bet you didn't do that. So I'm going to take the analysts opinion over yours: Nate Allen had a good year and was worth drafting so that we could get Brandon Graham.

I'm sorry that there's such a thing as years beyond your first. Graham will get better and was actually good this year when he was healthy. He was really the only good DE in the draft, so I'd make that pick again in a heartbeat.
  • So true! Its the one reason why in fantasy football you stay away from drafting the STUD CB's and Safeties. Revis's Island is called Revis's Island for a reason.
  • if Earl thomas had a better year its only because he played in every game. Outside of that, I did pay attention to him this year quite a bit cause I drafted him on one of my fantasy teams. He is a very good player.
  • Imagine how much better off the Eagles would have been last year if they did what I said in this thread...
