Happy birthday to former Giants Bill Madlock (1951) and Royce Clayton (1970).
1933: Kid Gleason, who is said to have invented the intentional walk, died on this date in 1933. Gleason, who played for the New York Giants from 1896 to 1900, is best remembered as the manager of the Black Sox in 1919. He played mostly infield for 22 years in the majors, with eight of those years as a pitcher. In 1897, Gleason drove in 100 runs—yet hit just one home run.
