Each week since the team's hot start this spring, analysts have talked about how whatever lay before the Baltimore Orioles was the next challenge. Sunday, the Orioles were hit with arguably their biggest challenge of the season. Right-hander Jason Hammel will miss about four weeks following Monday's scheduled arthroscopic surgery on his ailing right knee. Hammel has battled discomfort and inflammation in the knee all season. Friday, while pitching, he felt a pop. Sunday, with the news of his trip to the disabled list, the Orioles felt an acute discomfort, too. That pain is the sudden reaction to the news that they would be without their newfound ace, who had a breakout first half in his first season with the Orioles. Now, how the club responds may define the season. The injury leaves a gigantic hole in the rotation, one that will remain through the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. If the Orioles can remain competitive and within range of a playoff spot up to ...

Baltimore Orioles Lose Game, Series, and Starter Jason Hammel

The Baltimore Orioles are currently searching for a way to make the playoffs for the first time since 1997. They are quickly running out options after a cruel twist of fate further crippled a pitching staff that was already teetering. The Orioles fell 4-0 to the Detroit Tigers, but the most crucial blow of the day came from off the field in the training room. It...

Orioles' Hammel to have knee surgery, miss four weeks

Bad news for the Baltimore Orioles, as starting pitcher Jason Hammel will undergo surgery on his right knee. The surgery will knock Hammel out of action for four weeks or so. It goes without saying that this is a huge blow to the Orioles, and will affect their plans at the trade deadline. The O's are currently five games above .500, and clinging to the second wild card...

Has Miguel Gonzalez Earned a Spot in the Rotation?

I would say definitely. Miguel Gonzalez has been one of the many great stories that have happened in Baltimore this season and he could not have emerged at a better time. With the exception of Wei-Yin Chen the Orioles’ Ppening Day 5-man rotation is either in the minors or on the disabled list; Jason Hammel was placed on the 15 day DL and had surgery on a loose piece of cartilage...

Thome happy, active after move to Baltimore

MINNEAPOLIS The last time Jim Thome came to Target Field, he was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. At the time of that mid-June series, it appeared as if that was Thome's last visit to Minnesota. But the former Twins slugger was traded to Baltimore on June 30, and he returned to Target Field once again Monday as Minnesota hosts a four-game series with the Orioles this week...

Twins seek to repeat RBI blast vs. Orioles

With their starting rotation in a state of flux, the injury-plagued Baltimore Orioles are counting on Zach Britton to help provide some stability. Britton is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to make his season debut Tuesday night as the visiting Orioles take on the Minnesota Twins, who broke out in a big way during the opener of this four-game set. After going 11-11...

Teagarden's walk-off homer lifts O's

Taylor Teagarden ended his first game with the Baltimore Orioles in stunning fashion, hitting a two-run homer in the 13th inning that sealed an 8-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. In a crazy, back-and-forth duel that lasted 4 hours, 43 minutes, Baltimore scored three runs in the 13th to secure its 10th straight extra-inning win and snap Detroit's six-game winning...

Ron Gardenhire: Jim Thome has to ‘thrill me’ to get his 607th home run ball back

A piece of memorabilia that once was lost has now been found. Last month, Jim Thome hit his 607th career home run against the Twins at Target Field when he was still with the Phillies. The ball appeared to land in one of the flower pots above the wall in right-center field and was not recovered until the following day. Now, it is in Twins manager Ron Gardenhire’s possession. Thome...

Phillies 3B Placido Polanco Reportedly Interests the Baltimore Orioles

A Phillies.com post last night reported some trade interest in Placido Polanco, namely from the Baltimore Orioles.  The Orioles likely would be interested in Polanco as a second baseman, since Robert Andino is hitting just .182. The second half of the season for the Orioles commenced on Friday night; however, from the looks of it, the same old problems still afflict the Birds. Orioles-Twins Preview

It's been nearly 11 months since the last time the Baltimore Orioles visited Minnesota, and that's probably just fine with the Twins. Jim Thome's final game in a Twins uniform was the same day as the Orioles' last visit, but he's made frequent trips back to haunt Minnesota. Losers of 10 of 14 overall, Thome and the Orioles look to get well Monday night when...

Tillman Just Plain Bad; Orioles Killed By Twins...

After Saturday’s thrilling win against the Detroit Tigers, things seem to have only gotten worse for the Orioles. They lost on Sunday, and figured their first stop on a weeklong road trip against the woeful Minnesota Twins might do some good. Sadly, it would not go as planned. The Orioles were hoping for another good start from Chris Tillman and were optimistic in his abilities...
