Ken Rosenthal tweeted this morning that the Cubs are close to a deal with Paul Maholm. There's no word on length or deal, but assuming that Maholm does sign with the Cubs there are two things I think we can be pretty sure of:
Maholm will make a start against the Pirates in which his fastball doesn't top 87 mph, but he sets a career high in strikeouts.
Jeff Francis will probably be a Pirate in 2012.

The Cubs, continuing to rework their starting rotation, are close to signing free-agent left-hander Paul Maholm, according to a major-league source.
Maholm, 29, went 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA for the Pirates last season, ending the year on the DL with shoulder trouble. The Pirates paid him a $750,000 buyout rather than exercise his $9.75 million option.

Everyone has been waiting for weeks for the Cubs to trade Matt Garza and now... they still have to wait. What they don't have to wait for is the Cubs to replace Garza in the rotation as they look to have lined up his replacement by signing free agent pitcher Paul Maholm today.
Financial terms of the deal have not been released yet, but this definitely looks like a smart move...

Paul Maholm agreed to a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs that guarantees the former Pirates left-hander $4.75 million. The deal announced Tuesday includes a $4.25 million salary for this year and $6.5 million club option for 2013 and $500,000 buyout.

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract with left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm, adding depth to their starting rotation. The deal announced Tuesday includes a club option for 2013. The 29-year-old Maholm was limited by a left shoulder strain last season with Pittsburgh and made 26 starts, going 6-14 despite a 3.66 ERA.

The Orioles are close to a multiyear deal with Taiwanese lefty Wei-Yin Chen, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. As a foreign player in Nippon Professional Baseball, Chen had free agency negotiated into his contract with the Chunichi Dragons.
Last year in Japan, Chen posted a 2.68 ERA, 5.1 K/9, 1.7 BB/9, and 0.49 HR/9 in 164 2/3 innings.
