The Boston Red Sox have traded once beloved utility infielder, Pedro Ciriaco to San Diego for some cold, hard, cash. A player to be named later will also be sent from San Diego. A player that we will hear the name of once and likely never hear again. The Red Sox traded utility player Pedo Ciriaco to the Padres for a player to be named later or cash on Friday. Ciriaco had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. Peter Gammons first reported the deal. Pedro's time was growing thin with the Red Sox, because they simply had no use for him. He no longer had that spark that he displayed last year, especially against the Yankees. Jose Iglesias has matured immensely in many departments since last season, and has proven he is ready for the majors. Jose stole his job as utility man by proving he could fill in at any position in the infield except at 1st. With Will Middlebrooks being somewhat healthy again, there is need to have 2 utility men. He was great in 2012, but his 2013 performance was not so great (216/.293/.353). He'll probably get some more PT in San Diego, play well, and get some people thinking "why did they trade him?" A bad team usually works out for guys who are struggling. It was good while it lasted...mostly.
