Snedeker wins RBC Canadian Open Brandt Snedeker won the RBC Canadian Open Sunday at Glen Abbey golf club, moving into third in the FedEx Cup standings. Snedeker was able to keep his focus in the blustery conditions during the final round and ended up winning by three shots. Snedeker, the reigning FedEx cup champ, is now only trailing first place by 303 points and notches his second victory of the season and eighth top 10 with this win. There was a group of players who finished T-2 that couldn’t quite keep their foot on the gas. Will McGirt was able to complete a final round 68 that gave him his second straight runner-up finish in this event. Dustin Johnson was tied for the lead with Snedeker after he birdied the 16th hole, but then he hit his drive on 17 out of bounds and ended up taking a triple-bogey. It would be nice to see Johnson really put together four solid rounds of golf. His inconsistency has been plaguing him this year. Even in this tournament, Johnson opened with a 75, putting himself in a difficult position for the weekend. Firing a 63 on Saturday put him back in contention, but the one bad drive he hit on Sunday ended up being the shot that took him out of the winner’s circle. I was impressed however, with his bounce-back birdie at 18 to get back into a tie for second and still salvaging a 2-under par 70 for the day. Snedeker ended up being the primary beneficiary of Hunter Mahan’s withdrawal from the tournament due to the fact Mahan’s wife, Kandi, had gone into labor with their first child. Mahan was the 36-hole leader when he got a call Saturday before his round informing him of the news. He then departed the course shortly after and informed the tournament he needed to get back to Dallas to be with his wife. Next week the PGA Tour stops at Firestone CC for the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational. The tournament has potential to produce some drama with 49 of the top 50 players in the world scheduled to play, including Tiger Woods, who is a 7-time champion of the event. It will be interesting to see if he can capture another title or if Snedeker can continue his solid play and overtake Woods’ top spot in the FedEx Cup standings with a win.
