Even Roy Halladay encountered it before rejoining the Philadelphia Phillies.  What team did he face in Clearwater for his rehab outing? TAL’S HANDY CAPS WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I will publish after every battle that is not washed out.  I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats.  If you were directed here by a feed and this review does not mention yesterday’s contest, please go to the Phillies page for my most recent coverage. Woot! There It Is In The 4th After A 4-Bagger NITECAP INSIGHT All Parts Equal The Whole: The answer is that only divine intervention will save the red pinstripes, like 2007. At this point most will feel these examples are only signposts on the way to a cursed summer. The first clue appeared on July 4th with the 1st win for Cliff Lee, which was their only victory over the previous 12 decisions. He, naturally, lost when every other member of the rotation recorded wins. Independence Day was the freeing occasion and not July 3, while we waited in vain for someone else to chalk up a W. The Out-Of-The-Baseline Play In The 4th The other ace had his rehab in Florida against the Miracle from Ft. Myers. Miracle was used to describe what the Phils require. Then, there are the potential bookends of 2007 and 2012. We, coincidentally, faced the Rox in the ‘07 NLDS, and that was the organization a supernatural event had to be initiated against. Colorado was swept by Boston that year, which had Jonathan Papelbon as their hammer. The locals have never secured a wildcard, and they haven’t slipped in to capture a pennant or a World Series either. They’ve done the unexpected but not the impossible. Yeah! That’s Why I Signed Here. The must-see development was the matchup after the 13th. Lee was triumphant on his 14th attempt and that was the 1st shot after Friday the 13th. And now that he had absorbed another L on his ledger, perhaps, the baseball gods were accommodated. That said, the squad–like Lee–produced a victory. And the opposing hurler in that 1st win, also, had 13 starts before that effort. The 2nd battle for the 2nd half was a victory, which kept 2012 on life support. They were at the end of their possibilities, and then they delayed their fate.  Next, they took the series at Coors in convincing fashion.  That said, they went west to matchup with a stronger opponent.  Plus, Shane Victorino, Hunter Pence, Joe Blanton and Polly Polanco have an extra incentive to turn things around.  If the Phils don’t rebound, they will be ex-Phillies and they don’t want to be.  Now, the streak has reached three with the excitement we were accustomed to. The Impossible Math Behind Phils’ Playoff Hopes

Roy Halladay will need to lead the Phillies to 7 out of 10 wins for the rest of the season for the Phils to have a shot at the playoffs. I'd be sweating, too, Roy. Photo: AP With the Phillies’ win today against the struggling Rockies, the Fightins moved to 11 games behind co-Wild Card Leaders Atlanta and Pittsburgh with six teams in between. At this point, the Phils need to...

Phils' Halladay looks like his old self

It's no coincidence that the Philadelphia Phillies' worst stretch of this disappointing season came at the same time that two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay was on the disabled list. The Phils went 14-27 after Halladay went on the DL with a right lat (shoulder) injury on May 29. They were the second worst team in baseball over that time period. Since Halladay threw...

Roy Halladay to Return on Tuesday Against Dodgers

Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay threw a rehab start on Thursday night in Single A Clearwater. He pitched 3 innings, gave up two hits and an unearned run. Yesterday, Halladay threw another bullpen session and more importantly was cleared to come off of the disabled list. Halladay will make his first start on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s good news for the Phillies...

Phillies' Halladay will return Tuesday

The Philadelphia Phillies made official on Sunday what had been suspected on Saturday - that Roy Halladay will be their starting pitcher on Tuesday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Halladay has been on the disabled list since May 28 with a right lat strain and has not pitched since May 27. Halladay, 35, made a rehab start on Thursday with the Class A Fort Myers Miracle...

In Doc’s Return, Phils Down Dodgers

The Phillies celebrated Roy Halladay’s return with a pitching-dominated 3-2 win over the Dodgers, befitting of the ace of aces. Roy Halladay was back on the mound (AP) DOC MAKES HIS RETURN - 42 days. 42 long days. While he was out, the Phillies went 15-27–the second worst winning percentage in baseball during that span. It was a long, dark road. But Roy Halladay finally returned...

Roy Halladay Will Start On Tuesday Against The Dodgers

Photo: Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso Hallelujaha! Roy Halladay is back and he is ready to take the hill and he will do so on Tuesday night against the Dodgers. The Phils' ace has been out of action for over a month after a right lat strain back on May 27th. When originally diagnosed, Halladay was given 6-8 weeks recovery time plus rehab time. If my math is on track, he's...

Dodgers skid continues despite strong start

LOS ANGELES -- It was supposed to be the night that made the struggling Philadelphia Phillies whole again -- Roy Halladay returning from the disabled list to take on the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers. After getting injured second baseman Chase Utley and first baseman Ryan Howard back from the DL in the past 12 days, one of the final puzzle pieces that would put the team's turnaround...

Howard homers, Halladay harbors hope

The Phillies won an ugly game last night, and there is no other way to describe it. Atrocious base-running and poor fielding have doomed the Phillies all season, but somehow they were able to escape the unfortunate outcome Monday night in Los Angeles, beating the Dodgers 3-2. First, the positives. Joe Blanton gave the Phillies eight innings and rarely gave up a big hit. The Dodgers...

Votto, Bautista injured; Halladay, Sabathia return

Joey Votto needs knee surgery, and Jose Bautista is out with a wrist injury. Two of baseball's best hitters were sidelined in a matter of hours Monday, one night before a pair of top pitchers are slated to return to the mound. Roy Halladay and CC Sabathia are both set to come off the disabled list Tuesday - and the way things are shaping up this summer, pennant races all over...

Phillies at point where they could be buyers not sellers

With their fourth straight win, a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the latest news out of Phillies camp, they could be buyers, or do nothing, as the trade deadline approaches. Oh, there may be a small trade for a reliever, or a minor outfielder trade, but … It is reported in several Web sites that the Phillies have offered $130 million, six-year contract to Cole Hamels...
