Reliever battled injuries in 2009

Clay Condrey, who once played the often overlooked role in the bullpen as the mop-up guy, was not offered a contract over the weekend by the Phillies, sending him to the free agent market.

The move should not be too surprising. The Phillies have been rumored to be interested in John Smoltz as a reliever and the team is still thinking about bringing back Chan Ho Park. The Phillies bullpen is an area of concern this off-season and as of yet there have been no additions made to the back end of the pitching staff.

Condrey was the victim of some injuries in 2009, which may have been related to his overuse in the beginning of the season. With the bullpen being hit hard by injuries early in the season guys like Condrey were essentially forced to pitch in roles they were not accustomed too, and often times called upon more often than usual. the starting pitching woes certainly did not help either.

Condrey made $650,000 last season. It is unknown at this point if Condrey was offered a contract and denied it or if the Phillies just decided to pass on him.
