The Bucs brought out the brooms on a wet Thursday afternoon as they navigated around a rain delay to sweep the Cubs out of town. Jeanmar Gomez was strong before the long delay came in the fourth inning, and the bullpen was just as good after it. Vin Mazzaro earned the victory for throwing 2.1 scoreless innings. Jose Contreras and Justin Wilson combined to allow one run in the seventh, but Wilson recovered for a clean eighth. MLB saves leader Jason Grilli finished the job with a perfect ninth. The Bucs jumped out to a solid lead early on against Edwin Jackson, scoring all four runs in the first and second innings. Andrew McCutchen had another big day, lining two RBI singles (plus a third sharp single later in the game). Michael McKenry knocked in a run and Travis Snider had the highlight hit of the day: a triple to the Notch that ended with him flashing the Z while lying flat on his stomach: Lunchbox throwing the elusive “stomach Zoltan” after a triple! @lunchboxhero45 twitter.com/fsmikey/status… — Mikey (@fsmikey) May 23, 2013 The Bucs were silent at the plate after that, but the early output was good enough. They may have been wishing for more opportunities to hit against Jackson (who was knocked out after the rain delay, like Gomez). Jackson’s ERA is now north of 6, so fans should probably be thankful that he turned down the Bucs’ big offer two years ago. SERIES WRAPUP The Bucs completed a sweep and wrapped up an excellent homestand in which they won three series and went 8-2. They haven’t been blowing the Cubs and Astros away, but wins are good enough for me as long as they keep coming. While you could say that the narrow wins against bad teams are worrisome, the Bucs have done quite well against good teams so far this year as well. The Pirates are now 11 games over .500, off to one of the best starts in team history. They have the most home wins in the majors. They are on pace for exactly 100 wins.
