Found May 23, 2013 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
The Bucs brought out the brooms on a wet Thursday afternoon as they navigated around a rain delay to sweep the Cubs out of town. Jeanmar Gomez was strong before the long delay came in the fourth inning, and the bullpen was just as good after it. Vin Mazzaro earned the victory for throwing 2.1 scoreless innings. Jose Contreras and Justin Wilson combined to allow one run in the seventh, but Wilson recovered for a clean eighth. MLB saves leader Jason Grilli finished the job with a perfect ninth. The Bucs jumped out to a solid lead early on against Edwin Jackson, scoring all four runs in the first and second innings. Andrew McCutchen had another big day, lining two RBI singles (plus a third sharp single later in the game). Michael McKenry knocked in a run and Travis Snider had the highlight hit of the day: a triple to the Notch that ended with him flashing the Z while lying flat on his stomach: Lunchbox throwing the elusive “stomach Zoltan” after a triple! @lunchboxhero45 twitter.com/fs...

First Pitch: Runs Tough to Come By in Burnett Starts

A.J. Burnett has pitched like a staff ace so far in 2013 but does not have the record to show for it. The Pirates scored three or fewer runs in seven of A.J. Burnett’s 10 starts prior to Friday. Photo Credit: David Hague Granted, wins and losses are not good statistics to judge a pitcher’s performance but what is troubling has less to do with Burnett and more to do with the Pirates...

First Pitch: This Year is Different Because of the Depth

Jeanmar Gomez represents the biggest strength of the 2013 Pirates. (Photo Credit: David Hague) After recording the podcast today, I was talking with James and Tom about depth. We were specifically talking about the Dodgers, and how despite their mega payroll, they don’t really have a good team. They’ve had a lot of injuries, but who do they have behind those big salaries? Hanley...

Locke is locked in for Pirates

25-year-old Jeff Locke has found something this year and he has locked down his spot in the Pirates rotation. The lefty is 4-1 with an earned run average of 2.73, along with an impressive WHIP of 1.158. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko caught up with Locke recently.

Pirates Attack Edwin Jackson Early In 4-2 Win, Sweep Cubs

Travis Snider flashes the Zoltan after his RBI triple in the second inning. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Only Mother Nature could stop the Pirates’ offensive barrage on Edwin Jackson. In the first two innings, the Bucs smacked six hits and brought in four runs on the opposing starting pitcher, en route to a 4-2 Thursday afternoon victory and sweep over the Chicago Cubs. While Jackson...

Draft Prospect Watch: NCAA Tournament Talk and Reese McGuire News

It’s a big Friday night in college baseball as the draft is now just 13 days away. With the Pittsburgh Pirates picking #9 and #14, they are getting some last looks in at the players in their range. A lot of the talk recently has centered around players that have either dropped in the rankings, like Georgia HS outfielders Clint Frazier and Austin Meadows, or we have heard about...

Should the Pirates Go All In On International Signings This Year?

The new Collective Bargaining Agreement brought changes to the draft and the international markets, with the big changes being harsh penalties for teams who go over their allotted draft or international bonus pools. On the international market, if a team goes over their allocated pool, they would receive harsh penalties the following year, including a tax and the loss in the ability...

Gerrit Cole Links: Two Reports Have Cole As A Number Two Starter

Two reports list Gerrit Cole as a number two starter. Two different reports went up this morning about Pittsburgh Pirates top prospect Gerrit Cole. Both reports were similar, possibly seeing the same start from the right-hander, and the takeaway from both reports could challenge the idea that Cole is the top prospect in the system. **Mark Anderson of Baseball Prospectus scouted Cole...

Pirates Beat Cubs for 4th straight Win

“There’s nothing much like playoff hockey,” said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “We’re just getting into the spirit.” Hurdle, Pirates players and coaches are all getting into the playoff spirit by sporting Pittsburgh Penguin jerseys on the road. With a playoff state of mind it’s no surprise that the Pirates didn’t allow for the one-hour and forty-seven minute rain delay

This is your annual reminder that Andrew McCutchen is really good even when you don't notice

In both 2011 and 2012, Andrew McCutchen got off to a bit of a slow start. In his first 25 games of 2011, he only hit .202/.318/.348. In 2012, he got off to a more rounded start, but he didn't hit a home run until his 28th game of the season. In both seasons, I pointed out encouraging signs from McCutchen's start and wrote a post that amounted to, "If he gets hot, he...

Draft Notes: Jim Callis Draft Chat Recap and News

Jim Callis over at Baseball America held a draft chat today and had an interesting quote about the Pittsburgh Pirates options with their #9 and #14 pick, bringing a new name into the equation. When asked about the possibility of taking one pick with signability in mind to save for later overslot picks, Callis mentioned that he didn’t see the need in doing that. His quote was ...

Brandon Inge shows up to Pirates clubhouse in Penguins gear

It appears that Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Brandon Inge is letting his hockey fandom take over in the Pirates clubhouse.  Inge showed up on Thursday wearing full hockey equipment, a Mario Lemieux jersey and roller blades.  The Pirates are wearing Pittsburgh Penguins jerseys on their roadtrip to Cleveland and Detroit to support the team, but Inge took it a step further. ...

Pirates-Brewers Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates are tied for the second-best record in the NL, but Andrew McCutchen thinks they can be even better. McCutchen looks to continue his hot hitting and help the Pirates post a rare win in Milwaukee on Friday night in the opener of this three-game series. Pittsburgh (29-18) is a season-best 11 games over .500 and is tied with Cincinnati for second in the Central...

Cubs’ Camp on DL with Toe Bust

Chicago Cubs reliever, Shawn Camp, has been retrospectively punished by the baseball gods for not admitting to an injury, after further damaging a toe sprain on Tuesday night against the Pirates. Camp was checked out on Sunday and given the all clear to pitch two days later, but in hindsight should have gone straight on the 15-day DL. He came in to replace James Russell in the sixth...

The 2013 Cubs: Better Than We Think

This morning, the following tweet from Gordon Wittenmeyer showed up in my timeline. Cubs: 36 more H, 30 more 2B, 6 more HR and slug% 39 points higher than opponents. And 3.65 ERA. But 5 fewer runs, 9 games under .500. … — Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubCub) May 23, 2013 I hadn’t noticed this specifically, but once he said it, I did start to wonder about the Cubs record. After...
