The Pirates have released Aneudy Merejo.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have released three minor league players, according to Baseball America’s transactions. The players were Justin Ennis, Jorge Bishop, and Aneudy Merejo. Some information on the three players.
Justin Ennis – He was a lower level bullpen guy, splitting the last three years between West Virginia and State College. Ennis didn’t have much of a fastball, throwing it in the mid-80s. He added a knuckleball this year, but that didn’t help his numbers, and that type of move is usually a last ditch effort.
Jorge Bishop - Bishop showed some promise in the first half of the 2010 GCL season, but hasn’t repeated that success in two return trips to the level. In 2012 he hit for a .169 average as a 21 year old in his third year in the GCL.
Aneudy Merejo - Merejo is a small pitcher, but has a nice fastball, sitting 91-93 MPH with a lot of movement. He pairs that with a slurvey mid-70s curveball, and also throws a mid-80s changeup. All of his pitches have good movement. He also had good control and a good strikeout rate, but was hit around a bit too much and was a little old for the GCL.
All three were organizational guys in the lower levels.

Chris Resop has been traded to the Athletics.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have made two trades, dealing Yamaico Navarro and Chris Resop in separate deals, both announced by a team press release. They dealt Navarro to the Orioles for Jhondaniel Medina, and dealt Resop to the Athletics for Zach Thornton.
Medina has pitched as high as short-season A-ball, although he only had four innings...
In Winter League action last night, Starling Marte had a rough game, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. In his previous three games combined, Marte has a total of seven hits and eight RBI’s.
Alen Hanson had his second straight pinch-running appearance. He was immediately erased on a caught stealing. Hanson was playing in his seventh game of the DWL season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are pushing to break .500 in 2013. With a reported signing of Russell Martin as the teams backstop the Pirates are working to re-sign Jason Grilli. Grilli was a key cog in the Pirates bullpen last season setting up for closer Joel Hanrahan.
Should the Pirates be successful in re-signing Grilli, he would figure to be first inline between Hanrahan for saves...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired four professional scouts, per a team press release. The scouts are Ricky Bennett, Carlos Berroa, Ron Hopkins, and John Kosciak.
Bennett spent the last eight years with the Houston Astros, including the last two years as their Director of Professional Scouting. Prior to that he was with Detroit for eight years, including three years as the Director...
Today Baseball America released their top 100 college prospects for the 2013 draft. At the top of the list was Mark Appel, who ranked as the top prospect in the draft in their rankings back in August. That’s similar to last year, when Appel was the top prospect in the draft pre-season, but fell to eighth overall on draft day. Other notable players on the list:
21. Kent Emanuel...
Earlier today I wrote my “First Pitch” article, titled “Why the Pirates Shouldn’t Sign Russell Martin”. I spent some time taking a deep look at Martin, and looking at the Pirates’ situation. I had it all set up to post at midnight. Then the Pirates signed Martin to a two year, $17 M deal. Nothing really changed with my thoughts below, except for the fact that the move...
The Pirates’ decision to non-tender Jeff Karstens was the big news of the day, but they still had seven other players to deal with in advance of Friday’s midnight deadline.
Chris Resop was traded to Oakland for Zach Stewart, a reliever in high-A ball. Basically, he was non-tendered and the Bucs got a tiny return instead of nothing. I thought there was a chance Resop would be...
The Pirates made two minor trades on Wednesday, acquiring Vin Mazzaro, Clint Robinson, and Zach Stewart from the Royals and Red Sox. The Bucs sent minor leaguers Luis Rico and Luis Santos to Kansas City for Mazzaro and Robinson, and they will send Boston a player to be named later in exchange for Stewart.
Mazzaro, Robinson, and Stewart were added to the 40-man roster, and to clear...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have made the Russell Martin signing official via a team press release. The release includes the following quote from Neal Huntington.
“With the signing of Russell Martin, we have acquired a quality defensive catcher who is a disciplined hitter that adds power to our lineup,” said Huntington. “He also brings experience, leadership and a strong desire...
Ken Rosenthal has Ann update on the Pirates and Jason Grilli.
Grilli would probably require a two year deal. He’d be a great option for the Pirates as a closer if they deal Joel Hanrahan this off season. As a set up man he would be expensive for the Pirates, since he’d probably command $3-4 M per year.
Chan Ho Park last pitched in 2011 with the Orix Buffaloes. His last appearance in Major League Baseball came in 2010 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Park spent seventeen seasons in the major leagues after signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994.
Park, 39, was once one of the best pitchers in baseball. In his eight seasons with the Dodgers the right hander was 80-54 with a 3.80...
The Pittsburgh Pirates were reportedly hot in pursuit of former Yankees catcher Russell Martin, and for two years and $17 million, Martin is now a Pirate.
Martin, who will turn 30 this coming February, made $7.5 million with the Yankees this past season, his second with the club. In 133 games, he had 21 homers and a .211/.311/.403 line, providing 2.2 wins above replacement for...
As per Ken Rosenthal on Twitter, the Pirates have reached terms with Russell Martin, pending a physical. We will continue to flesh this out with more details about the terms of the deal as they become available.
