The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed left-handed pitcher Mike Zagurski to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, per a team press release. Zagurski has a 6.13 ERA in 69 innings in the majors, with a 9.1 K/9 and a 5.0 BB/9 ratio. Last year he pitched 37.1 innings in the majors with Arizona, posting a 5.54 ERA, an 8.2 K/9 and a 4.6 BB/9. According to a 2007 Baseball America scouting report, Zagurski throws an 89-92 MPH fastball with good life, along with a plus slider with sharp, late-breaking action. His Pitch F/X numbers confirm the fastball, with an average velocity of 91.6 in his career. It seems that the biggest issue has been control, which could be due to the “good life” on his fastball.

Chris Resop has been traded to the Athletics.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have made two trades, dealing Yamaico Navarro and Chris Resop in separate deals, both announced by a team press release. They dealt Navarro to the Orioles for Jhondaniel Medina, and dealt Resop to the Athletics for Zach Thornton.
Medina has pitched as high as short-season A-ball, although he only had four innings...
The Pirates have released Aneudy Merejo.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have released three minor league players, according to Baseball America’s transactions. The players were Justin Ennis, Jorge Bishop, and Aneudy Merejo. Some information on the three players.
Justin Ennis – He was a lower level bullpen guy, splitting the last three years between West Virginia and State College. Ennis...
The Pirates had a busy day. They traded Chris Resop, who was arbitration eligible for the second time and projected to make $1.3 M. They also dealt Yamaico Navarro (same link), who wasn’t arbitration eligible, but was designated for assignment the other day.
They non-tendered Jeff Karstens, then reached a deal with Charlie Morton for $2 M (I’ll get into this in a bit).
In Winter League action today in Australia, Adelaide lost 4-2 to Canberra. Three Pittsburgh Pirates players were in the starting lineup, Stefan Welch, Justin Howard and Dylan Child. Welch went 0-for-3, with a run scored and two strikeouts. His average dropped down to .205 after a 1-for-13 weekend. Howard went 2-for-4, with a double and run scored. Child had a rough time behind the...

Last time, we examined the good and bad of Pittsburgh Pirates’ owner Bob Nutting, President Frank Coonelly, and General Manager Neal Huntington. Here, we’ll take a look at the positives and negatives of some of the Pirates’ other decision makers.

In Winter League action last night, Starling Marte had a rough game, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. In his previous three games combined, Marte has a total of seven hits and eight RBI’s.
Alen Hanson had his second straight pinch-running appearance. He was immediately erased on a caught stealing. Hanson was playing in his seventh game of the DWL season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are pushing to break .500 in 2013. With a reported signing of Russell Martin as the teams backstop the Pirates are working to re-sign Jason Grilli. Grilli was a key cog in the Pirates bullpen last season setting up for closer Joel Hanrahan.
Should the Pirates be successful in re-signing Grilli, he would figure to be first inline between Hanrahan for saves...
The Pirates’ decision to non-tender Jeff Karstens was the big news of the day, but they still had seven other players to deal with in advance of Friday’s midnight deadline.
Chris Resop was traded to Oakland for Zach Stewart, a reliever in high-A ball. Basically, he was non-tendered and the Bucs got a tiny return instead of nothing. I thought there was a chance Resop would be...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have made the Russell Martin signing official via a team press release. The release includes the following quote from Neal Huntington.
“With the signing of Russell Martin, we have acquired a quality defensive catcher who is a disciplined hitter that adds power to our lineup,” said Huntington. “He also brings experience, leadership and a strong desire...
Ken Rosenthal has Ann update on the Pirates and Jason Grilli.
Grilli would probably require a two year deal. He’d be a great option for the Pirates as a closer if they deal Joel Hanrahan this off season. As a set up man he would be expensive for the Pirates, since he’d probably command $3-4 M per year.
The Baltimore Orioles have acquired infielder Yamaico Navarro from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league pitcher Jhondaniel Medina.
The 25-year-old Navarro hit .160 with one homer and four RBIs in 29 games with Pittsburgh last season. He is a career.279 hitter over seven minor league seasons.
Medina is a 19-year-old right-hander who pitched primarily in the Gulf Coast League...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have tendered offers to Neil Walker, James McDonald, Joel Hanrahan, Garrett Jones, and Gaby Sanchez. No real surprise there. Charlie Morton has also agreed to a deal with the Pirates. No word on what that deal entails but it’s at least slightly amusing that Charlie Morton, who will almost certainly miss time [...]
