NASHVILLE, Tenn. --Cam Talbot made 17 saves to record his second consecutive shutout, and the New York Rangers beat the Nashville Predators 2-0 on Saturday night. Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan scored for the Rangers, who have won the first two games of a five-game road trip. Mats Zuccarello assisted on both goals for New York , which has won six consecutive road games. Talbot got the start over No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist for the second straight Saturday night and didn't let any pucks get past him. He has a shutout streak of 146 minutes, 28 seconds. Nashville's season-best, three-game winning streak was snapped. McDonagh gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 13:13 of the second period. From the center of the blue line, defenseman Dan Girardi sent a one-timer toward the Nashville net. In the slot, McDonagh tipped the puck past goalie Marek Mazanec for his fifth goal of the season. Girardi has an assist in consecutive games. Stepan doubled New York's lead at 7:45 of the third. Skating down the left side on a 2-on-1, Zuccarello slid a pass to Stepan on the right side, where he put the puck past the diving Mazanec for his fifth goal. Mats Zuccarello doing big things for the New York Rangers

At 5’7, you might not notice Mats Zuccarello walking down Broadway. But on the ice, the diminutive forward sticks out like a dinghy at a Yacht Club. Mats Zuccarello is playing a key role now for the New York Rangers. The average NHL player is just over 6’1, with legs the size of tree trunks and shoulders you could build a city on. So it’s impossible not to notice – and root...

Preds muster just 17 shots, lose to Rangers

In a game that was originally supposed to feature two of the league’s best featured two of the league’s newest. Instead of Pekka Rinne and Henrik Lundqvist, Saturday night’s contest at Bridgestone Arena saw rookie goaltenders Marek Mazanec and Cam Talbot between the pipes for the Nashville Predators and New York Rangers, respectively. Mazanec stopped an impressive 32 of 34...

Benoit Pouliot vs. Taylor Pyatt vs. J.T. Miller

Matt Slocum/AP As the season has progressed the biggest concern has been the play of some of the veterans, specifically Benoit Pouliot and Taylor Pyatt (when healthy), and why a player like J.T. Miller isn’t in the lineup instead. None of the three have been consistent enough to warrant a full time spot on the roster, and it can be argued that some have been bad enough to get Prucha’d...

Muir: Rangers interested in Vernon Fiddler?

Per Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated, the Rangers may have interested in Dallas Stars center Vernon Fiddler. Now we need to take this with a grain of salt, because despite the fact this is in SI, Muir gets some basic facts wrong. Yes, Connor Allen and Dylan McIlrath are intriguing prospects, but neither are ready to play a role on a team built to win a Cup. Also, he mentions Michael...

Rating The Kids: Ryan Ellis

(Photo by Danny Murphy/Icon SMI) When Ryan Ellis was drafted in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Nashville Predators fans were in outrage. The team was coming off their first season not in the playoffs since 2003. The Preds also had spent a 2nd straight season without bonafide offensive talent in the wings - a growing concern at the time. The expectation was...

Jan Levine: Game 22: NYR 3 DAL 2, Hank the Story

For anyone who ever questions Henrik Lundqvist's value to the Rangers and his status as an elite goalie, have them check the highlights from last night's game. It was Hank early, middle and late and everything in between. He was the main and possibly the sole reason the Rangers pulled out a 3-2 win over Dallas on Thursday. Yes, Rick Nash scored a goal as did Chris Kreider...

The Fangover: Talbot hands Preds league-leading 5th shutout

Rookie goaltender Cam Talbot and the New York Rangers snapped the Nashville Predators' three-game win streak Saturday night at Bridgestone Arena. Sloppy offensive play and costly turnovers by Nashville cost them the game. The Predators were doubled in shots, 34-17. Ryan McDonagh's goal 13:13 in the second period that finally opened up the scoring was due to failed clearing...

Brooks: NHL’s new playoff math is advantageous to the middle of the pack

The New York Post's Larry Brooks seems to have something in common with the league's general managers: a bit of sticker shock regarding the NHL's "new" divisional playoff format's quirks: [As] it stood following Friday night’s games, the hybrid divisional format would guarantee either the team with the East’s seventh- or eighth-best record advances...

Rangers rookie Talbot shuts out Predators

It was The Coach in Black who managed to quiet down the Music City on a Saturday night. With Rangers coach Alain Vigneault sporting what he called his “Johnny Cash Suit,” his team went out and absolutely shutdown the Predators, earning a 2-0 win at Bridgestone Arena that was diminished to little more than whispers and echoes. “Our guys were focused and ready right from the...
