Thom Brennaman on Pirates pitcher: "This guy sucks"

Reds announcer and Fox play by play man Thom Brennaman got caught with a hot mic Sunday afternoon with Cincy hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates.  After Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke walked Reds SS Zack Cozart, you can hear Brennaman whisper "this guy sucks" into the microphone. One would have to presume Brennaman is not talking about Cozart, but Locke.  Perhaps that'...

The Pittsburgh Pirates' Neil Walker started to get over the hump of his return from right side soreness on Friday night when he started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis. Jason Grilli's recent struggles and last night's injury

After Jason Grilli served up his home run to Jayson Werth last night, my immediate thought was that the first thing I wanted to do after the game ended was to dig through his profile on Brooks' Baseball to see if I could find a reason for his recent struggles. On June 18th, Grilli struck out the side against the Reds with a 4-0 lead. To that point, Grilli had 34 appearances and...

"I don't think we'll have him under a microscope by any means...

The 10 Best Available Rentals at the MLB Trade Deadline

For a lot of teams, making the playoffs is a big deal. For instance, the Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t been October-bound since 1992. But it sometimes takes more than just a team’s current roster to make the push and of course, succeed in the playoffs. These contenders often look to sellers to pawn off a variety of helpful players, including rentals. Rentals are players who are...

Pittsburgh Pirates salvage series finale against Reds

Jeff Locke Jeff Locke returned to the mound with a strong performance as he helped the Pittsburgh Pirates avoid a sweep with a 3-2 win against their division rival Cincinnati Reds on Sunday at Great American Ball Park. The Pirates offense has been less than sub par in recent weeks but they had just enough to fuel the fire and salvage a game from the Reds. Coming into Sunday’s...

Gerrit Cole Rolls Through Nationals in 5-1 Pirates Victory

Gerrit Cole gave up fewer than two runs for the first time in his rookie season. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Gerrit Cole stepped into Tuesday’s start as the worst-performing pitcher in the Pirates rotation. Actually, let’s call it “worst-performing” because it’s really only his ERA (3.89, still better than NL-average) and strikeout rate (5.4 K/9) that were lagging behind...

Pirates place closer Jason Grilli on disabled list

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed RHP Jason Grilli on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain. Grilli was forced to exit Monday’s game after he hurt his forearm on a pitch. He had gone...

Pirates Are the “Team Du Jour” For Matt Garza

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the “team du jour” for Chicago Cubs starter, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. If you don’t know what that means, perhaps this will help. Wittenmyer points out that Neal Huntington suggested this afternoon that he has sought pitching, and said he has the flexibility to add payroll within reason. It sounds more like speculation...

Pirates 3, Reds 2

Annnnd…EXHALE!  The Pirates managed to navigate their way through another very tense contest in Cincinnati by FINALLY coming up with some big hits and getting some big outs late. The Bucs still lost the series, but avoided a sweep – losing just one game in the standings to the Reds feels a lot better than losing three. Plus, it’s good to have that first post-all-star-break...
