According to multiple media outlets and the athletic departments of Penn State and Virginia Tech the two schools will be playing a home and home series starting in 2022. Penn State will visit Blacksburg Sept 17, 2022 and the following year VT will visit Happy Valley on Sept 16th.

This matchup has been rumored for sometime and its good to see that is finally etched in stone. In today's college football environment one of the most important aspects of chasing a championship is non-conference scheduling. Penn State has been pretty aggresive in this arena lately with a CLEAR focus on regional rivalaries. Moreover, a strong non-conference matchup will become even more important when the B1G moves to a 9 game schedule in 2016.

With these marquee matchups falling into place it will be interesting to see who Penn State schedules with its two remaining spots, especially since the B1G has made it clear that they will no longer endorse playing FCS opponents. Penn State will need to be careful that it does not put itself into a situation where they have too strong of a non-conference schedule.

Syracuse, Pitt, WVU and now Virginia Tech, Penn State will likely start to look further south for future matchups. I foresee UNC and FSU as the most likely oppenets in the distant future.
