Longtime Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has died, the team announced Saturday on its website. He was 82.

Cause of death wasn't immediately known. The website said the Raiders would release a statement later Saturday.

Davis was part or principal owner of the Raiders franchise for more than 40 years, and also served as the team's head coach and general manager in the 1960s.

The native of Brookton, Massachusetts also spent time as the commissioner of the American Football League. His four-month tenure was marked by frequent clashes with the NFL, and he opted to resign his post when the AFL and NFL opted to merge.

The Raiders won three Super Bowl championships under Davis' ownership (1976, 1980, 1983) but haven't done much over the last 28 seasons, reaching only one other AFC Championship game (2002).

Davis was known for his confrontations with players and coaches. His most notable tiff was with star running back Marcus Allen, leading to Davis referring to Allen as a "cancer" before allowing him to depart the team in 1992.

Davis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
