Legendary comedian and satirist George Carlin called them “brain droppings,” the random musings that pop into one’s head on occasion. Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy pens a column every once in awhile in which he opines on “picked-up pieces” that are often short tidbits of sports information too tiny to require a lengthy diatribe. With a nod to Carlin and Shaughnessy, here are a few of my thoughts. I’ll just call them Random Red Sox-related Ruminations. I’m open to suggestions on a better title.   What's up with Jon Lester? There was a time not too long ago when I looked forward to No. 31's starts. The de facto Sox ace can be troublingly inconsistent. One start he's unhittable; the next, he's Dice-K-esque. Last night's start (4.1 IP, 11 H, 6 ER) against Arizona was more the latter. Red Sox principal owner John Henry reportedly has a deal in place to buy the Boston Globe for $70 million. Think about that. Henry just bought an entire news organization - with hundreds of employees - for approximately the price of a certain former Red Sox right fielder (ahem, J.D. Drew). The fact that the Globe now has Red Sox ties will surely elicit some questions about the newspaper's coverage of the team, but it's not the first time the Globe has had an ownership role in the team. Globe owners the Taylor family once owned the Globe and the Sox, as well as Fenway Park. The New York Times once owned the Globe and owned a minority share of the Red Sox from 2002 to 2012. The Intentional Talk show on MLB Network is kinda funny. Chris Rose and former Sox player Kevin Millar interviewed current Sox outfielder Shane Victorino the other day. Victorino was asked whom he'd have lunch with if he could lunch with anyone of his choosing. The choice? Bob Marley. Victorino's walk-up music at Fenway is Marley's "Buffalo Soldier." My wife attended her first Red Sox game at Fenway two years ago today. Jacoby Ellsbury, her favorite player (of course), hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 5-4 Sox win against the Cleveland Indians. Is it me, or does Jerry Remy seem more engaged in the booth with Don Orsillo this season? Maybe it's because his health is better? Exiled third baseman Will Middlebrooks is seemingly in baseball purgatory in Pawtucket. He's hitting home runs but doing little else, apparently, with the PawSox. I still think we'll see Xander Bogaerts at the hot corner before the season ends. Cody Ross had quite a return to Fenway last night. Two doubles, a homer and three runs batted in. I can't be the only one who finds Jamie Erdahl more enjoyable and polished on camera than current sideline "reporter" Jenny Dell.
