Corporate sponsorship has claimed another MLB stadium. Rangers Ballpark in Arlington will now be known as Globe Life Park in Arlington, which really doesn't roll off the tongue too well. The naming rights were bought by the Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company in Oklahoma City, and will net the Rangers millions of dollars in revenue. The naming rights for Globe Life Field (which still sounds awkward, by the way) were previous owned by Ameriquest Mortgage, but the deal was ended after just three years when Ameriquest bit the bullet during the banking crisis. Prior to Ameriquest's purchase of the rights in 2004, the park was known as The Ballpark in Arlington, a name that would be resurrected (and slightly modified) in 2007. Texas' sale pushes the number of teams that haven't sold their naming rights down to nine, though Turner Field should probably also be included in that list to make it ten. Of the ten remaining, the Braves will definitely be selling the rights to their new stadium, while the Marlins and Nationals seem to be destined to eventually sell their rights to a local company. It's pretty doubtful that neither Wrigley Field nor Fenway Park will be renamed as long as either stadium is standing, and I'd bet against Dodger Stadium or Yankee Stadium getting corporate sponsorship. The three stadiums that could go either way are Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Kauffman Field, and Angel Stadium. While Globe Life Field is an awkward sounding name, there are plenty of worse sounding names across the sports world. The Sacramento Kings play in Sleep Train Arena. The Arizona Cardinals play in the University of Phoenix Stadium (which is not located in Phoenix). The Louisville Cardinals play in the KFC Yum! Center (yes, the exclamation point is necessary). Toyota has a whopping ten  naming rights deals across the country. Compared to all of that...maybe Globe Life Field in Arlington isn't so awful. [MLB.com] [follow]
