The Toronto Raptors tried to address a major need by drafting guard Terrence Ross of Washington with the No. 8 pick of the first round of Thursday's NBA draft.

This was a little higher than many expected Ross to be taken, but the Raptors need a scoring wing player. Ross was an all-Pac-12 shooting guard, who, at 6-7, could also play the small forward spot, which is the Raptors' biggest need.

"It's just a blessing," Ross told ESPN of being drafted in the first round. "I can't even describe how I feel right now."

He averaged 16.4 points and 6.4 rebounds his final season at Washington as a sophomore

Ross is an explosive athlete, but he needs to add muscle to his upper body. Ross improved his draft status by averaging 25 points in the Huskies' four NIT games. Nonetheless, about a month ago, he was projected to be taken late in the first round, but he elevated his status with impressive workouts for teams.

Ross doesn't think it was any one thing that impressed the Raptors.

"I think must my all-around game," he told ESPN. "I got to the basket, shot the ball well and my overall defensive intensity."

Ross is fourth Washington player to be drafted in the Top 10 in the modern draft era, joining Detlef Schrempf, Brandon Roy and Spencer Hawes.
