Evan Longoria isn't likely to be placed on the disabled list immediately and it's uknown whether he'll hit the DL at all.

The Rays said Tuesday, denying a report from the St. Petersburg Times that the All-Star third baseman would miss 6-8 weeks with a hamstring injury, that they would see how Longoria feels Tuesday and beyond before considering any transaction.

Longoria left Monday's 3-2 win over the Mariners with soreness behind his left knee with a "hamstring-knee issue." The Rays, noting Longoria's history as a fast healer, weren't prepared to disclose the exact nature of the injury or any timetable for his return Tuesday.

His status remains unknown, but vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told MLB.com a DL stint was not imminent.

"We're going to see how he's doing today," Friedman said. "It's one of those situations where if there's improvement day after day, we probably will not DL him."

With no improvement, even if Longoria can return in 11 or 12 days, the Rays will place him on the disabled list, Friedman said, adding "we're not anticipating a move today pregame."

Longoria is batting .329 with four home runs, 19 RBIs and 15 walks. He was injured trying to steal second base in the third inning Monday, when his left foot caught on Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan's cleat.
