The Tampa Bay Rays will have the same double-play combination in 2014 that they had in 2013. MLB.com’s Bill Chastain reports that the Rays have exercised the 2014 club option years for both second baseman Ben Zobrist ($7.25 million) and shortstop Yunel Escobar ($5 million). Chastain describes the decisions as “clear cut.” Both players have remained very healthy throughout their young careers. Zobrist has played at least 150 games every year since becoming a full-time player in 2009. His only significant injuries occurred in 2007 (strained abdomen) and 2008 (fractured thumb). Escobar has played at least 130 games every year since 2008. He has had only two DL stints (2010 and 2011), and both ended at 18 and 15 days, respectively. Both players played in 150+ games in 2013. Zobrist hit .275/.354/.402 with 12 HR and 71 RBI. He manned mostly second base, but his versatility allows him to play many positions.
