PLAYERS: David Ortiz
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
David Ortiz is not injured, but the Boston Red Sox wanted to help keep it that way for the rest of the season.  Manager John Farrell decided to give Ortiz some extended rest, so he was not in the lineup again yesterday.  Having Ortiz out of the lineup for the second-straight day yesterday give the veteran slugger three flu days off when you factor today's off day. According to Ian Browne of, Farrell plans to give guys as much rest as possible as the team takes on National League teams in National League parks.  With the use of the pitcher in play, Farrell can give someone who may have otherwise been slotted as the DH a a day off.  He did so with Mike Napoli not too long ago, and he is doing so with Ortiz (even though the club was playing at home). After last season's injury, the Red Sox did not know what to expect from Ortiz.  He had a phenomenal year leading up to his achilles injury, then he was slow to recover from the injury.  Despite it all, he is back to his old way.  Ortiz is hitting .318/399/.572.  His OPS is off last year's pace, but not by much. Along with Ortiz's success, the Red Sox are having a great season.  After last year's debacle, there were concerns about what direction this team would take.  Would they have to rebuild?  Could they compete now?  They've proven that with the right leadership and focus, they can keep up with the best teams in the league. David Ortiz Amazed by Strength of Jimmy Fund Patients, Parents (Video)

As the longest-tenured player on the Red Sox roster, David Ortiz has a wealth of experience working with the Jimmy Fund. Ortiz stopped by WEEI’s Salk & Holley during the Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon on Tuesday to share some of those experiences. The slugger expressed just how impressed he is by not only the patients at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, but also their parents, who...

Peavy Goes Nine, Napoli Goes Nuts

How do you put the exclamation point on winning a series against the hottest team in the National League and the team you’re the odds-on favorite to meet in the World Series? If you’re Mike Napoli, whose beard is hand-crafted from the finest children’s nightmares, you blast a two run homer, then step back into the dugout with your fists raised up in the air and screaming something...

Doubront, Lackey, Lester To Face O's At Fenway

Since the final month of the disastrous 2011 season, the Baltimore Orioles have been a thorn in the side of The Carmine Hose. Even this year, Boston is just 4-6 against the Birds as they fly into Fenway for a three-game set. The Red Sox will send 9-6 lefty Felix Doubront to the mound tonight to face fellow port-sider Wei-Yin Chen. John Lackey will take to the hill on Wednesday night...

Jon Lester Records Another Quality Start, Continues Streak of Dominance Since All-Star Break (Video)

A four-run first inning was all the offense Jon Lester needed to lead the Red Sox past the surging Dodgers Saturday afternoon. Jonny Gomes‘ three run homer capped the productive inning, and Lester was dominant on the mound, allowing only 3 hits and one earned run, while striking out six over 7 1/3 innings. The left-hander has found his groove in the second half of the season, posting...

Red Sox Make Odd Trade For OF Quintin Berry

We're not exactly sure what it means, but the Red Sox consummated a trade today—acquiring outfielder Quintin Berry from the Kansas City Royals for Clayton Mortensen. Berry's only MLB experience came in 2012 with the Tigers—hitting .258 in 94 games for Detroit. Berry had been designated for assignment by the Royals in June. Your guess is as good as ours!

Red Sox Lester shuts down Dodgers, 4-2

There were some anxious moments in the late innings but the Red Sox pitchers rode to the rescue Saturday helping to deliver a 4-2 victory over the white-hot Los Angeles Dodgers. Jon Lester allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings to win his second straight starts and four relievers combined to get the final five outs as the Dodgers lost for just for just the fourth time in 23 games...

NESN Names More Substitutes For Jerry Remy

NESN announced today that Dennis Eckersley would continue pairing up with Don Orsillo on TV broadcasts of Red Sox games through Thursday. Then, Friday through Monday, Orsillo will be joined by Jon Rish—who quit WEEI last April before that radio station experienced its major shake-ups (that persist to this day). Also on Friday, Hall of Fame baseball writer Peter Gammons will be...

Dodgers lose to Red Sox 4-2

Hyun-Jin Ryu struggled in the first inning against the Boston Red Sox. Eventually, the rookie settled down but his team mounted its comeback too late. Ryu lost consecutive decisions for the first time in his career, giving up four runs and five hits in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 4-2 loss on Sunday that ended their four-game winning streak. Jonny Gomes hit a three-run homer off...

Stephen Drew Starts at Shortstop Against Left-Hander Wei-Yin Chen in Series Opener With Orioles

The Red Sox will return home Tuesday night to face the Baltimore Orioles, and with the O’s going with a left-hander to open the series, it seemed to make sense to start Xander Bogaerts at shortstop to make his home debut. However, it will be Stephen Drew in the lineup to begin the three-game series, which also opens a nine-game homestand. The left-handed-hitting Drew will get the...
