After their most successful homestand in more than three years, the Boston Red Sox will begin a 1o-game West Coast road trip on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. Felix Doubront will get the nod in the series opener, and he will need to have his best stuff in order to slow down an Angels team that has won eight of its last nine games. The Sox are coming off a hot streak of their own, though, going 8-1 on their nine-game homestand. They outscored Colorado, Toronto and San Diego 51-30 and will need their bats to stay alive against Angels starter C.J. Wilson. Wilson is looking to win his fifth consecutive start but will be tasked with putting out the red-hot bats of leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury and second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Ellsbury is riding a 14-game hit streak, including a three-hit performance on Thursday’s 8-0 rout of the San Diego Padres. The numbers are in Pedroia’s favor heading into Friday’s contest. The 29-year-old has hit Wilson well throughout his career, going 8...

Angels 9, Red Sox 7(11)

Koji Uehara entered Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels hoping he'd get one more chance to make the AL All-Star team because of the last-chance fan ballot. He might want to rethink his plans for the break. Uehara was brought in by manager John Farrell with two out in the ninth inning after the Angels loaded the bases against Alex Wilson. The Red Sox were...

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jered Weaver has become a first-time father, naming his son in tribute to late teammate and friend Nick Adenhart. The team said Friday that Aden David Weaver was born earlier in the day to Weaver and his wife, Kristin. The baby weighs 8 pounds. Weaver has paid tribute to Adenhart ever since the young pitcher was killed by a drunken driver after a game...

Your Morning Dump...Where the Sox head to the West Coast hot

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. With travel bags littered across the clubhouse floor and the Red Sox players ready to go wheels up for a 10-game trip against West Coast teams, there was a sense of turning the page quickly following...

Florida QB Driskel signs contract with Red Sox

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel could take a swing at another sport. Driskel announced Thursday that he has signed with the Boston Red Sox, who selected him in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball draft last month, but said he is committed to finishing his college career with the Gators and pursing an NFL job. Driskel says in a statement, "After...

Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning, after the Angels rallied to tie it with four runs in the ninth, and Los Angeles beat the Boston Red Sox 9-7 on Saturday night to snap the AL East-leaders' five-game winning streak. Brad Hawpe, who came in to play first base in the 10th, singled with one out in the 11th against Craig Breslow (2-2). Hamilton drove the next...

Mike Trout actually gives a home run away (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. This just in: Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is a human being. The 21-year-old is in only his second full season in the majors, but opposing hitters already know that they have to hit the ball way over the wall if they want to pop a home run [...]

Game 89: Red Sox at Angels - Getting it done in the Big A

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer Sources close to the Red Sox have informed me that 7:52 pm EDT (4:52 LA time) Mike Napoli’s ninth-inning home run Friday night finally landed. And David Ortiz was still pimpin’ his. Ah, yes. These are your Boston Red Sox. The best team in the American League and having the most fun you’ve seen in several years. Whoever said chemistry doesn’t...

Recap - Late night meltdown

The Guru Contributing Writer It was late night drama at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Apparently the Rally Monkey is a night owl. Josh Hamilton hit a Craig Breslow (2-2) pitch for a two-run home run and a 9-7 Angels walk-off win in the bottom of the 11th. This one stings. With the game in hand in the bottom of the ninth 7-3, Red Sox reliever Alex Wilson loaded the bases and Sox...

Angels roar back in the ninth; Win in Extras

Admit it, you stopped watching around the 6th inning. Sure, you kept your phone on just to check in from time to time, but surely there was something better on TV than watching the Angles mail another one in. Still questions remained. Would they get totally blown out? would there be any sort of comeback thwarted by a poorly timed double play? Then all of sudden the phone starting...

Here are the 3 stars of the game. Game 86: Star 3: Edinson Volquez Volquez pitched fantastically for the Padres giving his team 6 strong innings of work. He allowed only 7 hits in that...

Sox top Padres

I missed the first eight and a half innings of tonight’s game because I was in class: graduate school started yesterday and we’ve hit the ground running. Of course, I surreptitiously monitored the progress of the Red Sox as consistently as possible, and was thrilled every time I checked in by the excellent start from John Lackey. You can’t script it any better than this: the...

How's this for 4th of July fireworks, a game ending with a grand slam walk-off home run. Kole Calhoun of the Salt Lake Bees provided the big blast. Your browser does not support iframes.
