The Red Sox have had a flair for the dramatic all season. Those big moments usually come before the late local news signs off for the night but nonetheless the Red Sox find themselves back on top of the ever-changing AL East after their 10th walkoff victory of the season last night. Stephen Drew delivered the latest installment with a single in the bottom of the 15th to give the Sox a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners in front of a sparse post-midnight crowd at Fenway Park. The victory marks the fifth time since 1950 the Sox have recorded 10 walkoff wins in a season. The latest coming in the longest game of the season puts them a half-game up on the Tampa Bay Rays in the division race. “We somehow find some energy late in the game” Sox manager John Farrell said of his team’s knack for late-game heroics. “It’s been many different guys who have been the reason for a walkoff. But I can tell you the conversation each time we were at the plate in extra innings we are looking for something to draw energy from to make one last push and we were able to do that here again tonight.” The Red Sox shouldn’t have been in this situation with the way the Mariners bullpen was able to lockdown and quiet their bats in the latter innings. The Sox failed to register a hit from the eighth to the 13th inning a span of 20 hitters (with only two reaching base via a walk. But the bullpen matched Seattle’s inning for inning and for some reason the Sox have an ability to hang around and the players who stuck around talked about their ability to never feel like a game is truly over. Outfielder Jonny Gomes said he saw that ability to win in crunch time — the Sox are 16-7 in games decided in the last at-bat — early in the season.
