James Loney was in the Red Sox lineup and playing first base on Sunday, a day after he was acquired from Los Angeles in the trade that unloaded Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and more than $250 million in salaries on the Dodgers.
The Red Sox also optioned outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin to Triple-A Pawtucket and recalled right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato from Pawtucket.
Loney, 28, is a career .284 hitter who is batting .254 with four home runs and 33 RBI this season.
Lin, 23, was recalled Saturday for his third stint with the Red Sox this season.
Beato was acquired by the Red Sox from the Mets on Aug. 16, completing the trade for catcher Kelly Shoppach.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Matsuzaka left after an inning, tying his shortest outing since joining the Red Sox."Leading up to the start, my neck tightened up a little bit and I ended up not being able to throw a bullpen," he...
THE NAME GAME
Let's say you're a big leaguer and you're saddled with what to name your pet hedgehog...what do you do?Well, if you're Kelly Shoppach, you take to Twitter! That's right. On Thursday, the Boston Red Sox catcher enlisted his 17,000-plus followers to help him name his latest family friend.Unfortunately, the only two responses he got were "Sonic" and '...
Jon Lester took the mound for the Sox in hopes of evening the series. He did his job, unfortunately he saw the usually reliable bullpen let him down when Alfredo Aceves blew his 4th save of the season. Ugh.
Lester had a rough first inning. Like Dice-K he got tagged by a former Sox when Coco Crisp hit a leadoff HR to start the game. Sox 0-1. He threw 31 pitches to get through...
The choice to make Daniel Bard a starter may have had farther reaching consequences for the Boston Red Sox
It’s an old adage that the waves made by a stone hitting the water are larger the further you get away from the source and that this applies to the decision’s made not concerning rocks and still lakes.
The Boston Red Sox are currently paying because of the waves created...
Sometimes, you just gotta let loose. That's what NESN announcers Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy did after the Red Sox' loss to Oakland on Monday night, and luckily for us the cameras were rolling. You could say that they were dancing, but that's a very liberal definition of the word. In any case, it's awesome, so check out the latest hijinks from the two in the animation below.
Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. It's not necessarily original or profound to point out that baseball is a game of streaks, and that teams are going to have to wade through the valleys in addition to enjoying the...
Cody Ross spent a couple of the best years of his career in the Bay Area, coming over to the San Francisco Giants in a midseason 2010 trade. Of course, Ross played a huge role to helping to Giants to their first World Series title since they switched coasts, and he clearly has some pleasant memories of his time in the shadow of the Bay Bridge. Playing Monday night on the opposite...
8:40 p.m.: The Red Sox have to feel very, very fortunate to escape from Seattle with a series split. After beginning to look like the prolific offense that many expected of them, the bats largely went cold in the Pacific Northwest, as the Sox scored just nine runs over the four-game series. The flip side of that is the pitching -- the bullpen in particular -- was borderline spectacular...
The New York Yankees have claimed former outfielder Darnell McDonald off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
McDonald was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Saturday. He will join the Yankees on Friday for the start of a four-game series at Fenway Park.
McDonald appeared in 38 games and hit .214 with two homers and nine RBIs. The Yankees will make a corresponding 25-man roster...

In the 4th inning of Wednesday afternoon's loss to the Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz made a little history when he hit the 400th home run of his career off of A's rookie A.J. Griffin.
